Cracks Up Audience at Oscars

Kirk Douglas, 94, Cracks Up Audience at Oscars

Academy Awards down to start life with a third award of the night, Best Supporting Actress. First, the acting legend Kirk Douglas vamped a storm as a presenter, first flirting with co-host Anne Hathaway - "Where were you when I'm making a movie?" - and then revealed the winner to extend the length of comics with extended riff about how Australians Hugh Jackman laughs at schtick Douglas', but not Brit Colin Firth. "I do not know why everyone in Australia thinks I'm funny."

Finally, Douglas revealed The Fighter‘s Melissa Leo had won the Oscar, her first win after being nominated two years ago for Best Actress in Frozen River. “Yeah, I am kinda speechless,” Leo said, looking up to the third balcony of the Kodak Theatre. “When I watched Kate [Winslet] two years ago, it looked so f—ing easy!” The ABC time-delay censors were quick on the trigger, however, and all the national viewing audience heard from Leo was silence, followed by the roaring laughter of the audience and Leo’s stunned expression. But the Oscar winner soldiered on, thanking the Academy for acknowledging great work, holding her statue triumphantly in the air.

He makes Anne Hathaway blush and calls out Colin Firth for never laughing.

Kirk Douglas, 94, made a rare appearance, presenting best supporting actress at the 83rd annual Academy Awards Sunday, and he had the audience cracking up.
Before introducing the nominees, he told host James Franco he looked better out of the cave, a funny reference to Franco's film 127 Hours.
He then praised Franco's Oscar co-host Anne Hathaway.
"She's gorgeous!," Douglas gushed, causing Hathaway to blow him kisses. "Where were you when I was making pictures?"
He also made a few jokes on the Hugh Jackman to always laugh and poke fun at Colin Firth to never laugh ("He's British!" denounced him).

He then opened the envelope, but continues to delay announcing the winner, causing the audience to crack up.

He finally announced the winners: Melissa Leo, for The Fighter.

"You're much more beautiful than you at The Fighter!" he told me.

"You're not so bad yourself ... what do you do in the future?" Leo jokingly asked.

One flew over the cuckoo s nest

Oscar worthy speech

Action Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over Nest of the cuckoo's" centered on the battle of the will of Randle McMurphy, a convict who thinks a trip to the hospital's mental state would be an easy way to ride out his sentence, and Nurse Ratched, who runs the ward with a smile of calm and hand iron. However, in some ways, the key character is Chief Bromden, the longest-tenured patient ward, which serves (in the novel and to a lesser extent in the play) as the narrator of the story. His relationship with McMurphy and contrast bow their fate is the core problem.

Mac, Big Nurse and Chief Broom - as the characters are also known - is a key strength of the story. Here is a look at actors tasked with bringing them to life on stage.
PJ Sosko (McMurphy)
Director Rose Riordan says that in casting someone as Mac she "was looking for someone who had a level of charisma and testosterone. The thing that PJ has is he's a little larger than life naturally. Mac is kind of a soft-hearted thug, and I think PJ has some of that."

Sosko lives in New York, where he's done stage and TV work (including a villain role on one of the final New York episodes in the "Law & Order" franchise). But he worked previously at Portland Center Stage in the lead role of a 2008 stage adaptation of Kesey's other masterpiece, "Sometimes a Great Notion," and is happy "to come back here and do another character in the canon. It's a real small canon, and I've done it now."

"Honestly, dude, I didn't trust anyone else to do it right. Mac's an entertainer; I'm an entertainer. I'm not coming from a place of being a (jerk). I dunno, I just think I'm a good egg. And I'm here to tell a story."

You might think Sosko has a tough job, stepping into a role made famous by Jack Nicholson in the Oscar-gobbling film. But, though he says he's always admired Nicholson's performance, he's not thinking about that.

"There's a free spirit in Mac that everyone can relate to. Jack had his version and I have mine. You can't play Mac without a devil-may-care attitude. And I got a good devil in me."

Gretchen Corbett (Nurse Ratched)

"All the time, when I tell people what role I'm doing, they go, 'Whoa!'" Corbett says. "She looms large. My challenge with this is to come at it as though she's a real person. And I have to make it up, because it's not really in the book."

Indeed, Kesey kept his story's villain pure. She's seen only through the eyes of others, for whom she is an unchanging symbol of oppressive power and control. So it's up to Corbett, a respected veteran of the Portland stage, to play the woman behind the smiling yet fearsome facade.

"Every Nurse Ratched does the same thing," she notes. "But this is my Nurse Ratched. I know I don't look like the woman described in the book ... but I have my own little backpack of thoughts about her."

Tim Sampson (Chief Bromden)

As striking as the characters of McMurphy and Ratched need to be, Riordan says she never worried about finding suitably compelling actors for those roles. But Bromden, the towering half-Native American who becomes the focus of the story's redemptive theme, was another matter. "It's so specific, in terms of his size, his age."

Tim Sampson, it turns out, has equally specific connections to the role. A member of the Muskogee tribe from Oklahoma, not only has Sampson played the part before (alongside Gary Sinise in a Steppenwolf Theatre production that ran in Chicago, London and on Broadway), but his father, Will Sampson, also played the role in the 1975 movie.

The father-son connection is crucial. The elder Sampson got his son into acting and stunt work, and in Tim Sampson's view the key to understanding Chief Bromden is in the love the character had for his father, whose humiliation was the cause of the Chief's own mental collapse.

When performing on Broadway, Sampson recalls, he came to recognize the power of the story's messages, which at least in part relate to the importance of continuity with nature, family and culture. "One night this great big man came up to me after the show, crying. And he said, 'Tonight I'm going to go right back to the hotel and call my dad.'"

That connection is part of what it means to be mentally healthy, Sampson says. "My dad used to always tell me, 'Always know where you've come from, who you are and where you're going.'"

Oscar-worthy speech

Film inspires stuttering therapy programs
By Andrew M. Seder aseder@timesleader.com

DALLAS TWP. – For years, when it came to the portrayal of someone with a stutter in a Hollywood movie, the character was usually used as comic relief.

But the Oscar-nominated film “The King’s Speech” has placed the spotlight on stuttering and has drawn rave reviews for the actors’ portrayals and the struggle more than 3 million Americans go through each day.

Thirteen people who deal with stuttering are currently undergoing therapy at The Speech-Language-Hearing Center at Misericordia University.

Glen Tellis, chairman of the school’s speech-language pathology program, was among the first to see the movie when it came to Northeast Pennsylvania theaters in December.

He said rave reviews from those in the speech-language field worldwide inspired him to see the movie once it appeared locally. He said the high expectations colleagues created were met – and exceeded.

“I think it’s right up there as one of the best movies I’ve seen. It was so powerful,” said Tellis, of Dallas.

He said the honest portrayals by the actors, especially Geoffrey Rush, who plays speech therapist Lionel Logue, and Colin Firth, who plays King George VI, “were amazing.”

“I think it was pretty realistic,” he said of Firth’s “stutter.” “He didn’t overact at all. He hit it head on.”
Inspires hope

For his clients and others with a stutter who have seen the movie, Tellis said the message you walk away from is one of hope.

Chris Monjelo, of Pittston, has had a stutter for as long as he can remember. The 19-year-old Lake-Lehman High School graduate recalls when friends first began telling him he stuttered he didn’t believe them because he was in denial.

Finally, when he realized it was true, he became fearful of speaking in public and found ways to avoid it in school. He would beg his mom to let him stay home on days he had oral assignments and skip classes when he was set to address the class.

He said he went most of high school without speaking to classmates.

“I guess I was virtually mute,” said Monjelo on Thursday during a break from a therapy session with Susan Minsavage, a speech language pathology graduate student from Kingston.

He came to the clinic a year ago and has made remarkable strides, Tellis said.

“When he first came, it took him 2 or 3 minutes just to say his name,” Tellis said. Now, thanks to therapy and a willingness to want to control his stutter, Monjelo is talking with confidence and even got a job at a gas station in Lehman Township, where he interacts with customers.

As a reporter interviewed him, with a photographer and videographer in the room, Monjelo’s stutter resurfaced.

He noted that “when I first came here my speaking was very restricted and I would have probably never had done something like this.”

But with Tellis and Minsavage looking on and reminding him of methods to deal with the stutter, he spoke clearer and more assured, just as King George VI was able to do in the movie and in real life.
Sheds light on problem

The movie, which Monjelo watched in Wilkes-Barre last month, left him feeling “empowered” and glad that finally someone was able “to shed some light on stuttering.”

Though there have been great strides in stuttering therapy, the exact cause of the speech disorder is still not known.

According to the Stuttering Foundation, “There are four factors most likely to contribute to the development of stuttering: genetics; child development; neurophysiology; and family dynamics.”

But fantasy wasn’t used to make the movie into something unreal or to give false hope that stuttering is something that could be healed.

“There is no major Hollywood ending,” said Tellis, who is one of about 200 Specialty Board on Fluency Disorders-recognized specialists in the world and one of only 10 in Pennsylvania. “There is no cure for stuttering, but it can be managed effectively.”

He said one of the keys is to seek treatment early. Most people develop a stutter at the age of 2 or 3. He said that’s the time to begin therapy.

While he watched the movie with a much deeper and more personal perspective than most who were in the Cinemark Theater on Montage Mountain that day after Christmas, Tellis said he could see and hear that those who crammed into the theater with him walked away with a deeper appreciation of stuttering and the psychological issues that impact it.

Those issues include the fear of speaking, the fear of being made fun of or laughed at, the fear of being mimicked.

He said the majority of those in that theater – and any theater that’s been playing the movie the past three months – may not be able to relate because they don’t struggle with the speech disorder or know someone who does. But for those who do deal or help others deal with stuttering, the movie sent a powerful message.

“(Stuttering) doesn’t stop you from getting anywhere in life,” he said, whether you’re the king of England, Vice President Joe Biden or James Earl Jones, the voice of Darth Vader, all people who have overcome a stutter.
Dozen Oscar nominations

The movie is nominated for 12 Oscars at tonight’s Academy Awards ceremony, including best movie, best director, best actor for Firth, and Rush for best supporting actor. In it, the stuttering struggles of King George VI and the efforts by Logue to help him overcome the impediment are chronicled.

Stuttering is nothing new to movies, but Tellis points out that when many people are asked to recall a movie character with a stutter, it’s typically Michael Palin’s portrayal of Ken Pile in “A Fish Called Wanda.” Palin portrays Pile as an awkward, nervous, recluse, stereotypes about stutters that Tellis said are unfortunate and mostly untrue.

Other characters have had similar maladies because of stuttering, including the Billy Bibbit character portrayed by Brad Dourif in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” The character has a self-esteem problem and even attempts suicide after he’s laughed following a marriage proposal.

Tellis said to have a portrayal that goes much deeper than stereotypes and clichs is a red letter day for those in the field and those struggling with a stutter.

Monjelo said for the time he was thinking about getting a job where he will have to deal with others only slightly. But now he says he just did not want to get a job where he interacted with others, he wanted to become a speech therapist so she can help others like him have helped.

He enrolled at Luzerne County Community College in hopes to get enough general education credits transfer to universities that offer speech therapy programs, such as the Misericordia. In the meantime, he is busy trying to form a support group of Northeastern Pennsylvania stutterers' which will meet at the clinic Misericordia.

Celtics Trade

Celtics Trade

Celtics fall to Nuggets on the heels of stunning trade day

The Magic's playoff hopes raised at the trade deadline without them making a trade.
Probably the best deal Orlando rocky season.
(How to Otis Smith's luck is running, maybe let someone else pull the trigger is the way to go.)

Celtics surprisingly tight deleted one of the obstacles in the way of Dwight Howard when the teams met in the postseason.

They handled the road-grader Kendrick Perkins to the Oklahoma City Thunder, guests Friday at Amway Center.
Perkins does not play, still hobbled by knee pain. But when he does, he is about the only center who could play Howard upright without crying to Mommy --- and doing a commendable job.

Boston and Orlando have met in the past two East finals, but things have changed. By trading Perkins, the Celtics are saying, in part, that they no longer consider the Magic as big a threat as Miami or Chicago.

"They weren't thinking about us when they did it," guard Gilbert Arenas said.

Another example of the shrinking respect for the Magic.

The Celtics aren't overly concerned if Howard torches them. They don't believe in his supporting cast, and frankly, it's hard to argue at the moment.

Here's what the Celtics think of the Magic: They are willing to let creaky Shaquille O'Neal and fragile Jermaine O'Neal battle Howard. Plus, they have Krstic Nenad or Nenad Krstic, who was the big man the Celtics received in the trade, along with forward Jeff Green.

The Celtics are counting on The Big Coattail --- Shaq's the league's oldest player at 38 --- to stay healthy enough to play, oh, four games in a row.

And when the O'Neals either need oxygen or Ace bandages, they figure Kevin Garnett or Big Baby Davis can bother Howard, which is also an indictment of Orlando's power forwards.

I like the Celtics' trade/gamble a lot --- for the Magic.

It's just what they needed, judging from their playoff prospects. Howard already has the advantage against the Heat and the Bulls.

Whether Howard can get his teammates to make shots and stops without threatening their lives is a whole other story.

Nobody is saying that Perkins is Bill Russell. He didn't play major minutes, largely because he was a non-factor offensively.

But Perkins was an authentic tough guy (as opposed to KG) and anchored the Celtics' vaunted defense.

Howard averaged just 12.3 points last season against Perkins and the Celtics. Against Boston in the first three playoff games, he averaged 16.6 points. Howard scored only seven points in Game 3 as the Celtics took a commanding 3-0 lead.

Perkins isn't about numbers, although the dollar numbers he's demanding as a free agent supposedly forced the Celtics to make this horrific move. While compensation is nice, chemistry is critical, especially as tight as the Celtics seemingly have been.

Rumor has it that titles rank high in Boston, so I'd have kept Perkins to assist them in making one of the few runs left by this aging roster.

Magic Coach Stan Van Gundy said he was "taken aback" by the trade, likening it to the Lakers moving Andrew Bynum or Lamar Odom.

And Dwight? He didn't want to acknowledge that Perkins even existed, much less defended him decently.

I pressed him, and Howard said, "(The Celtics) are pretty good with him or without him."

We'll see. All I know is that Howard unwittingly got some help he has needed.

Celtics fall to Nuggets on the heels of stunning trade day

Yes, the Boston Celtics' 75-89 loss to the Denver Nuggets late Thursday night is just one regular season game. On its own, the defeat at Denver during the Cs' western road trip probably doesn't mean much. The problem is that the 34-25 Nuggets aren't a team the Celtics should've lost to. Not only that, but the Cs had what was arguably their most lackluster performance of the entire season, the ugly game looking lopsided in Denver's favor throughout. As painful to watch as the match-up was, the game was an afterthought to the bigger team news of the day, news which puts that surprising loss into crystal clear context.

That news was of course the shocking departure of Kendrick Perkins(notes), an instrumental part of the Cs' glorious 2008 NBA Championship. Perk was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Jeff Green(notes), though the addition of Green is little consolation to Celtics fans like me. The trade happened amid a flurry of last-minute roster moves just before the trade deadline on Thursday. Cs little man Nate Robinson(notes), as well as rookies Semih Erden(notes) and Luke Harangody(notes) will also no longer wear the green and white. I know that Celtics fans are taking Perk's loss hard (I know I am), but the Cs vets, for whom Perk was and is a close friend, are undoubtedly hurting.

The effect of Perk's departure is the all too obvious scapegoat for the Celtics' uncharacteristically anemic showing on the court at Denver. That and the fact that Boston's usual bench line-up was absent was no doubt going to make for a difficult game at the outset. Indeed, it would be tough to explain the night's final numbers otherwise.

Though Kevin Garnett(notes) had a double-double which included 13 rebounds, his 14 point tally for the night was hardly what you could call impressive. Pierce's 17 had him finish the game as the Cs' points leader, a sign of the team's overall lack of production. The Celtics were 39% in shooting from the field, and were 3 for 17 in three-pointers. For their part, the Nuggets were 45.3% from the field, made 5 of 15 behind the three-point line, and had 52 total rebounds to the Celtics' 38.

What can other Celtics fans take away from Thursday night's ugly game? Chalk up the loss to emotionally drained players and a bench decimated in the day's trades. While Jeff Green undoubtedly would have made a difference if he had been out on the court, so would Perk. At least former D-Leaguer Chris Johnson(notes) had decent minutes, two for three from the field and going two for two in free throws. Nevertheless, the rest of the season is looking a little more uncertain to this Celtics fan.

Kirk Hinrich

Kirk Hinrich: He's a solid pro, not a savior.

nba trades

Kirk Hinrich
The Hawks make a trade, but it’s not the trade they needed

Hawks needed to make a trade in the worst way, and the trade they made was not the worst ever. That's OK. Not great, not terrible. Just OK.

They sent Mike Bibby, who was too old and not really a point guard again and imported Kirk Hinrich, who's a good player but that is not exclusively his own point guard. They shed Mo Evans, who disposed of, and Jordan Crawford, about the promises they just raved last summer, and acquired Hilton Armstrong, who is an average of 1.9 points and 2.8 rebounds.

Best-case scenario: Hinrich does his hybrid-guard act — he used to be quite good at it, but his numbers haven’t been anything special the past four seasons — and puts the other Hawks in the right position and this team manages to win a first-round series.

Worst-case scenario: Hinrich fails to mesh with Joe Johnson — say what you want about Bibby, but he and Johnson made a nice tandem — and the Hawks, who have bombed out in Round 2 the past two seasons, bomb out in Round 1 this spring.

Either way, the addition of Hinrich and Armstrong is no cause for re-calibration of this team’s ceiling. The Hawks aren’t much different today than they’ve been for the past three years. They’re a pretty good team in an Eastern Conference that keeps getting more competitive at the top.

If the notion was to find a galvanizing talent at this deadline, they failed. The man that would have remade the local club just got traded to New Jersey, and he was, fittingly enough, one of the two famous men on whom general manager Billy Knight passed to draft Marvin Williams in 2005. Utah moved to trade Deron Williams, and the Hawks apparently weren’t in the bidding. (Deron Williams was picked one spot ahead of Chris Paul, and the two have long ranked, to the Hawks’ lasting chagrin, among the NBA’s five best point guards.)

Instead the Hawks landed Hinrich, who’s a solid pro but not an All-Star, and Armstrong, who’s a younger Jason Collins. And it’s clear the Hawks were the desperate party here: Why else trade three players for two and throw in a first-round pick to boot? That’s a high price to pay for a hybrid guard who was made superfluous in Chicago by Derrick Rose and who isn’t needed in Washington because of John Wall.

Say this, though, for Rick Sund: At least he did something. At least he acknowledged what had become blatant: This team as constituted had reached its peak and was on the descent. It hasn’t fallen to pieces yet — it’s still fifth in the East — and it’s surely too talent to collapse utterly, but the talent that had been compiled and nurtured by both Knight and Sund has topped out. It needs something else, even if the something else is little more than change for change’s sake.

Two NBA teams had had the same starting lineup since February 2008: One is the Celtics, who’ve won a title and graced another NBA final; the other was the Hawks, who hadn’t managed to win a game beyond the first round. Bibby was the last of that starting five to arrive — he came by way of a February deal with Sacramento — and he wasn’t the Bibby of old at any time in his Atlanta stay. But he was a solid pro who knew how to play, and without him these Hawks might never have made the playoffs at all.

Now he’s gone, and it was past time for him to leave. This trade is probably enough to keep the Hawks ahead of the Knicks in the East, probably not enough to elevate them above Orlando for fourth place. It gives them hope in the sense that something has been done, but the right something again eluded this franchise. Deron Williams, the guy they needed back in 2005 and needed today, got traded on Wednesday, and it wasn’t to the Hawks.

NBA Trade Deadline: Kirk Hinrich traded to Hawks for Mike Bibby, Jordan Crawford, first-round pick

It looks like Kirk Hinrich is indeed on his way out the door.  The Wizards' guard has been in trade rumors all season, and now it looks like he's heading to the Atlanta Hawks.

Michael Lee says that it's Jordan Crawford, not Jamal Crawford, that is coming back to the Wizards.

Kirk Hinrich not playing tonight. #wizards in talks with ATL (for Jordan Crawford), but no deal yet. Could happen soon, according to source ...

A lot of players would obviously have to be involved because of salaries, but I heard Jordan, not Jamal Crawford. #wizards

Meanwhile, David Aldridge of NBA.com has the specific trade.

Wiz trading Hinrich/Hilton Armstrong 2 ATL 4 Jordan Crawford, Bibby, Mo Evans, first

If this is the Hawks' pick this year, it will likely be in the early- to mid-20s.  The Wizards only save about $500,000 next season, as Bibby and Crawford combine to make about $7.5 million in 2012, whereas Hinrich makes $8 million.

My first reaction is that I don't really like this trade, though the first-round pick is kind of nice.

Derek jeter mansion house $ 7,000,000

Derek Jeter dropped $ 7,000,000 only for land to build nearly 31,000 square foot mega-waterfront home in Tampa ... and it was unbelievable.

Garden feature has recently completed two 3 car garage, pool, billiard room, space memorabilia, nine bathrooms and seven bedrooms for Jeter and Minka Kelly's boyfriend to use at their discretion.

Welcome to St. Jetersburg!

Derek Jeter's mansion: Too busy building to play ball?

(CBS / AP) - "Too busy to build the houses?" That's what Yankee owner Hank Steinbrenner told reporters Monday when asked about his team poor finish at the end of last season. Steinbrenner used the plural when discussing players'home', but it's hard not to think he was talking specifically about home Derek Jeter, known by locals as "St. Jetersburg."

Jeter is only now putting the finishing touches on a house he started building in 2008 in Tampa, Florida. What is the real reason for 30,000 square feet, Jeter was not "hungry" last year enough? Steinbrenner told reporters, "Sometimes teams get a little satisfied, they celebrate too long."

Obviously the Yanks owner wasn't talking about Jeter alone. In fact, after a mini-blow up in the New York media (the New York Post ran this helpful-if-inaccurate summary: "YANK BOSS: WE LOST OVER JETER MANSION"), Steinbrenner was back in front of reporters on Tuesday clarifying his remarks. "It certainly isn't Derek," he told the Associated Press. "Derek's got five rings. You don't win five rings by being complacent."

And what was Captain Clutch's response to all this? In a short pre-workout interview with reporters, Jeter said he understood most of Steinbrenner's comments, but "the house I didn't understand. That's a first. That's funny, I think. I'm not moving, so we won't be talking about this again."

By GREG BEACHAM | Published: 5:26 AM 02/21/2011

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Kobe Bryant won his record-tying fourth All-Star MVP award Sunday night with 37 points and 14 rebounds in the West’s 148-143 win over the East, finishing five points shy of the All-Star scoring record.

Bryant clearly wanted the trophy that would tie him with Bob Pettit in NBA history, but until taking over the starring role on Sunday, Bryant said he spent the weekend attempting to cede the spotlight. He imagines himself sliding into a background role in the NBA cacophony behind LeBrond James and his Miami Heat teammates, or the Boston Celtics’ four All-Stars, or even Clippers rookie Blake Griffin.

“I’ve been there, you know what I mean?” Bryant said. “It’s not about that for me at this point in my career. It’s very important for the game to continue to have young stars emerge. … It’s important for me to step aside. It’s about me coming out and performing and staying healthy, and doing the right things after 15 years.”
That didn’t stop Bryant from going after an MVP trophy and a West win with unusually ferocious play for a glorified exhibition.
And even though James racked up a silky-smooth triple-double, Kevin Durant dropped 34 points in 30 minutes, and Amare Stoudemire slammed and jammed his way through Staples Center for 29 points, the All-Stars seemed uniformly pleased Bryant came away with one more trophy for his overstuffed case back home in Orange County.

"Everyone wants him to get the MVP," said Dwyane Wade of Miami, last season's MVP. "He came with a very aggressive, as aggressive as I never saw anyone in the All-Star game."

Second team All-Star apparently deferred to Bryant for much of the night, found him on the fast break dunks and cleared the way for it - rare these days for Bryant, who prefers to preserve mental illness in his knee. Bryant even throw slam defense against James' in the third quarter, followed with a 3-pointer.

So enjoy it, Kobe. Hidden in all the adulation and goodwill around hometown All-Star weekend was another common theme: That’s the last prize that will come easily to the Los Angeles Lakers’ five-time champion guard this year.
LeBron’s Miami Heat, K.D.’s rising Thunder and the archrival Celtics won’t make it nearly as easy for Kobe Bryant to claim his sixth championship ring.

“He deserved it,” Durant said. “Thirty-seven and 14? That’s unbelievable numbers. I wanted him to get 40, but the old fella kind of tired out a little bit.”
The Lakers are still title contenders, but they went into the break with three straight losses and serious questions about whether this veteran team can get motivated for a threepeat run. Bryant jokingly claimed he couldn’t remember the Lakers’ last game before the break — an inexplicable five-point loss at NBA-worst Cleveland.

Kobe Bryant plans to deal with all that Monday during practice in El Segundo.

"We're looking forward to it," Bryant said of the long stretch. "We are ready for the challenge. Pau (Gasol) and I have been talking this whole time about looking forward to it, and back on it. We have to communicate with all the fellas, and we all can not wait to get started."
Bryant fell short of Wilt Chamberlain’s All-Star record 42 points in 1962, but not for lack of trying by his teammates. He went scoreless in the final 6:48.
“I wish we could have,” New Orleans guard Chris Paul said. “But Kobe Bryant is one of those guys who has been in the league for 13 years, but it seems like he’s getting younger, so he’ll have another opportunity.”

With the advent of two-car design, choose a favorite place for 53rd Daytona 500 is an almost impossible task. Cars were closer than ever in speed, and resolve will come to that drive, which in the last round.

Still, there are some drivers who have established themselves as favorites today.

“If you look at the past 10 plate races, there’s been like three guys who have won every one of them,” said Jamie McMurray, the 2010 Daytona 500 winner and one of the best restrictor-plate racers out there. “I think it’s hard to pick a favorite, but I think there is some coincidence there, that the same people have ended up in the front.”

With that in mind, here’s who to watch this year:

1. KEVIN HARVICK — The 2007 Daytona 500 winner and two-time Budweiser Shootout champion, Harvick won two of the four plate races last year and finished second and fourth in the other two.

“We’re comfortable with where we are at with our car and just with the type of racing and the conditions that we are racing in,” said Harvick. “You just got to put yourself, keep yourself in position to be able to win, so that’s what we’ve been trying to do and hopefully it plays out for us on Sunday.”

2. TONY STEWART — On Saturday, Stewart won his fourth consecutive NASCAR Nationwide Series February race at Daytona and he figures to be tough today, too.

“I’ve got Saturday figured out,” said the two-time Sprint Cup champ. “I just can’t figure out Sunday. We’ve had really good luck in the Nationwide Series at this race and we’ve always been able to get ourselves close to the front when we needed to and sort it out from there.”

3. KURT BUSCH — With victories in the Budweiser Shootout and his Gatorade Duel, Busch suddenly vaulted from the ranks of contender to one of the favorites.

“This Daytona 500 is what we came here for,” Busch said. “The tokens that we have with the Shootout and the Gatorade are nice, but we’re here after the big ultimate prize.”

4. JAMIE MCMURRAY — The affable McMurray is always a threat to win any restrictor-plate race he’s in. And his Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Chevrolet has been fast.

“It has been a good week,” said McMurray. “I was happy with how our car performed in the Bud Shootout. ... “It is amazing to me how much it has changed in just the last two years with the paving of the tracks; just how different plate racing is now than what it was three or four years ago.”

5. DALE EARNHARDT JR. — If he hadn’t crashed his primary car in Daytona 500 practice, Earnhardt Jr. would be the favorite. As it is, he’ll have to start the race from the back of the field in a back-up car.

“The backup car is fine, just as good as the other ones,” said Earnhardt. “They are all kit cars any ways. The bodies are all the same. Good motors. We'll have plenty of speed, but we have this car; the third car, the fourth car is just as good. I mean, they are all good.”

6. JEFF GORDON — The pairing of Gordon and new crew chief Alan Gustafson seems to be a good one, with the four-time champion showing strength during Speedweeks. Gordon will start today’s race from the outside of Row 1.

“I’ve had a blast working with Alan,” said Gordon. “He’s very intense and very focused. I feel like our personalities match-up well. He’s all business. And when I get to the race track, that’s how I like it to be. They’ve just built really great race cars for us over the winter and have worked really hard. It’s great to be on the front row for the Daytona 500.”

7. CARL EDWARDS — Many pundits believe the Ford FR9 engine has superior cooling ability, which could be a huge advantage over 500 miles today. And Edwards has been the best of the Ford racers so far.

“I still don’t think we have taxed these engines long enough to know where the breaking point is,” said Edwards. “We will find that out Sunday. Guys will be running right at the upper limit of temperature and RPM’s and I think engine failures will become a big part of the race. That FR9 engine seems to be one that can stay cooler, which is great.”

8. CLINT BOWYER — All four of the Richard Childress Racing cars have been stout during Speedweeks. Bowyer has finished second in both his Gatorade Duel and Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race.

“I think the 500 is going to be good for us,” said Bowyer. “Our cars are all fast. We work well together as a team; and doing a good job of managing everything. I think the results have spoken for themselves.”

9. JEFF BURTON — Already, Burton was earned his first Speedweeks victory, winning his Gatorade Duel. There’s no reason to expect he won’t be up front again today.

“We've done this tandem thing before, but never with this much,” said Burton. “So we're all learning a lot and we're learning quickly. If you're not learning, you're going to be left behind because it is a different kind of an art to make this happen.”

10. MICHAEL WALTRIP — The semi-retired Waltrip might finally have exorcized the demons haunting him ever since Earnhardt’s death with Friday night’s emotional NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory. Another win today would be indescribable.

“Ten years ago I stood here and I thought it was the greatest day ever and it turned out to be the worst day ever,” said Waltrip. “I just wanted to come back here this year and honor Dale and thank him and give his fans something to cheer for.”

Others, like Gary Klein, have years appearing in the tournament thanks to their skills. And well, winning is a whole other thing.
The Bass Master Classic was won last year by Kevin VanDam.

There is no better way to understand what is the ideal day to day to hear the views of those who are actually fishing. Wednesday night, there was a Red Carpet event, by invitation only, for competitors and select members of the media offering additional opportunities to talk with the pros.

After several days of hard practice, the Elite Series pros converseed Media Prefish the period, offering predictions of what fans can expect on Day 1 of the tournament.
Each angler offered their views on how they feel conditions will affect their plans once the tournament starts.
Strong local favorite, Fishouflage Pro Greg Hackney believes that the big fish are. “Fishermen need to use a minimum of 16 to 18 pounds per day for a title shot. Ample numbers of large fish are available that this fishery is as good as it ever was. There are so many different places to fish there guys will travel up to two hours to reach their fish. You can also expect to see fishermen camping spots on fish producers hoping to load the boat each day. ”
“No matter where these guys are planning to fish, anglers have to adapt to rapidly changing conditions,” said the reigning 2010 Classic champion Kevin VanDam. “This time of year, fish are either in a model of winter and transition in pre-spawn, which will ultimately be determined by weather and time of the water. Some fishermen wills struggle for quality limit, while others bang the fish they need to fight. ”
In collaboration with Classic this weekend the 2011 Bassmaster New Orleans, Stratos boat appealed to all lovers of Stratos to visit its booth and receive free limited edition gear.

Flange Not Phalange

Flange. Not Phalange.
Posted by Naomi on February 17th, 2011 at 23:52

Flange? I thought it was spelled "Phalange."

Flange is another name for the special parts breast pump attached to your breast and looked like space-age shooter torpedo or something Madonna might have worn in the period of her Vogue.
It isn’t only for breast pumps:

Flange: (n) A protruding rim, edge, rib, or collar, as on a wheel or a pipe shaft, used to strengthen an object, hold it in place, or attach it to another object.

Medela calls it a breastshield. I blame my doula for making it a two syllable word-”Fuh-lange.”
Don’t ask me where I came up with the ‘Ph’ part. I figured it must be spelled some fancy way. Never mind that I didn’t see it in the dictionary when I looked it up. And not one person corrected me in this post. Maybe no one said anything because I was sleep-deprived with a newborn. No one wanted to hurt my feelings. I appreciate that.
Anyway, this is a flange. Not a ‘phalange.’ Perhaps I’ll just start saying ‘breastshield.’
At least, now I know the truth.
