Watch all goal VIDEO RESULT Man UTD VS Barcelona 2 -1

The awful advancing bout will be missing the world’s best player, however, as Lionel Messi has been larboard out of the Barcelona band so he can blow afterward accommodating in Argentina’s bootless bid to win the Copa America beforehand this month.

Some had thought that because Argentina had been surprisingly knocked out in the quarter finals of the Copa America, Messi would be available for the exhibition friendly against the English Premier League champions. However, Messi was left out of the 25-player squad released by the Spanish giants.
Barcelona’s other South American players involved in the Copa America were also left out: Brazil’s Dani Alves, Chilean wing Alexis Sanchez; Argentina’s Javier Mascherano and Gabriel Milito; and Brazil’s Adriano Correia.
However, such is the depth of the talent of the world’s best team, as well as the pedigree of the English champions that a football spectacle can still be expected.
Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov, Pedro, David Villa, Nemanja Vidic, Eric Abidal and Gerard Pique are just some of the world class names expected to take part in the match.

For the aboriginal time back their affray in the Champions League final in May, Manchester United and Barcelona will accommodated afresh in a affable actuality at FedEx Field.

Some above stars are missing, Messi and Chicharito are the best audacious absences, but it charcoal a acute match-up amid two of the world’s best teams.

Follow forth actuality for alive updates from Landover. The lineups were appear earlier, you can bolt them afterwards the jump.
90’+- Wow. Michael Owen with a laugher. Obertan turned the corner and found Owen alone on the far post, but he somehow put his effort way over the frame. That was embarrassing.

89’ - Nearly an equalizer! Barcelona moving the ball well in the final third and get a good look at goal, but Thiago’s shot goes over the bar.

85’ - The pace of the game has certainly picked up since about the 65th minute. That’s when you saw some subs and young players come on. Fresh legs and something to prove. Been a bit more back and forth.

76’ - GOAL! Didn’t take long for Manchester United to reclaim the lead. A very poor square pass from Busquets in his own half was intercepted by Tom Cleverly, and he put Michael Owen in alone. Owen made no mistake in front of net, chipping over Valdes’ left hand to give United the 2-1 lead.

70’ - GOAL! Barcelona finally evens the score on a brilliant play from Thiago. A ball from Carlos Carmona slipped by a sliding Ryan Giggs, Thiago took possession, looked up from 20 yards out and hit a curling ball that turned inside out and into the upper 90. 1-1.
Computer issues kept me from updating the first 25 minutes of the second half.

HALFTIME: Manchester United certainly looked the more dangerous team in the attack, with Barcelona only showing some flashes of its ability when it strings passes together. Iniesta had late signature pass that set up a chance, but Manchester United’s defense handled its business.
Nani was the most dangerous player on the field in the first 45 minutes, constantly taking on defenders down the right sideline and serving in several dangerous crosses. His perfectly-timed run was rewarded and he showed composure with a great finish. It’s 1-0 here at FedEx in favor of United.

43’ - Afellay off. Isaac Cuenca on for Barcelona.

41’ - Looks like Afellay just pulled his left hamstring. Grabbed back of his left leg as he dribbled toward the sideline. He’ll get subbed out.

39’ - Nani continues to cause headaches for Barca, but a Rooney giveaway at the top of the box leads to a counter. No matter. Once again United’s back line steps up, this time Jonny Evans doing well to block a shot and draw a foul.

35’ - United defense is up to the task tonight, but Barcelona seems to be taking extra touches in the box. Looking for special moments in a friendly perhaps.

30’ - Jonathan dos Santos earns a yellow card for a knee-to-thigh challenge on Ashley Young.

28’ - It’s a deserved lead for Manchester United. Barcelona had started to press more and Man U was defending with 11 behind the ball, but they broke out quickly on that counter and Nani timed his run perfectly to stay onside. Barca playing a high line defensively and United looking to exploit it.

22’ - GOAL! Barcelona was holding the ball more in the final third and earns a corner kick but Manchester United clears and counters right up the gut. Nani makes a run crossing defenders to the left side, gets the feed from Welbeck and finishes low. 1-0 Manchester United

20’ - Still not much for Barcelona in the final third. Afellay with a couple stepovers to get into the box but his touch is a bit heavy and the ball goes over the end line for a goal kick.

15’ - A Barca chant breaks out at FedEx but United looking dangerous still. A little combination between Rooney and Nani leads to another cross, but Barca clears. The right side is being exploited right now by the Red Devils. Abidal playing left back.

10’ - Manchester United has what may qualify as more than a half chance. Nani got the ball on the right sideline and served a low curling ball on the ground. Rooney met it at the near post but his effort was wide. Should have at least put the shot on target. Nonetheless, Man U actually with the better of play, I’d argue, through the first 10 minutes.

5’ - Manchester United with the first chance. Evra with a pretty ball down the left sideline to Ashley Young, but his cross is easily collected by Valdes. Now Sergio Busquets is down on the field.

1’ - And we’re off here at FedEx Field. Manchester United kicked off as the crowd still fills in the upper bowl in Landover.

Barcelona Starting XI: Valdes; Fontas, Abidal, Alcantara, dos Santos; Busquets, Iniesta, Keita; Villa, Pedro, Afellay. Subs: Pinto, Masip, Balliu, Pique, Puyol, Xavi, Suarez, Riverola, Cabelino, Lozano, Muniesa, Carmona, Espinosa, Cuenca

Manchester United Starting XI: De Gea; Evra, Vidic, Evans, Rafael; Cleverly, Anderson, Young, Nani; Rooney, Welbeck. Subs: Lindegaard, Amos, Jones, Ferdinand, Smalling, Fabio, Obertan, Owen, Giggs, Carrick, Park, Diouf, Berbatov, Macheda

Carlos Beltran

Carlos Beltran to the SF Giants?

"Carlos Beltran is on the verge of becoming a San Francisco Giant. Logistics are currently being worked out according to Yahoo’s Tim Brown, but it appears Beltran is headed to the Bay. San Francisco is apparently willing to part with top prospect Gary Brown, which likely helped the talks progress from a pinch of the cheek to a full blown, 7 minutes of heaven makeout session."

According to my sources, Beltran’s Milk Dud has opted to stay in Queens & his fickle Neg-Burns remain undecided.

UPDATE: According to Buster Olney, Brown is't part of the deal. Stud pitching prospect Zach Wheeler is the centerpiece. For now. Regardless, the Giants appear to be the team closest to penetration.

UPDATE #2: Pending approval from Beltran, who has a no-trade clause, & Bird Selig’s office, this deal will be as official as Kate Upton’s ass.

Tarvaris Jackson agrees to terms with Seattle

Tarvaris Jackson agrees to terms with Seattle
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Tarvaris Jackson (7) throws a pass during the first quarter against the Denver Broncos in a NFL preseason football game, Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010 in Minneapolis. (Associated Press: Andy Blenkush)

The Tarvaris Jackson era in Minnesota is over.
The Seattle Times is reporting that the Seahawks have reached an agreement with Jackson, who will be paired with his former offensive coordinator from Minnesota, Darrell Bevell. The deal becomes official on Friday when veteran free agents can sign contracts.
Jackson, a former second-round pick out of Alabama State, threw for 3,984 yards, 24 touchdowns, 22 interceptions and completed 58 percent of his passes in five seasons with the Vikings.
With Jackson gone, the Vikings are "one of a few" teams that have discussed a trade with Washington about Donovan McNabb, the soon-to-be

35-year-old who was benched twice during the Redskins' 6-10 campaign last season, according to an ESPN report. McNabb threw 15 interceptions and registered a 77.1 passer rating with limited offensive weapons in Washington, and fans and media members have speculated whether he's past his prime.
The Redskins could have trouble trading McNabb because he's due a $6.2-million roster bonus if not cut by Friday at 4 p.m.
In other moves today, the Vikings agreed to terms on a one-year deal with Chicago free agent receiver Devin Aromashodu. In five seasons with the Bears, Aromashodu had 41 catches for 593 yards over five seasons.
Aromashodu is best known to Minnesota fans for his 39-yard touchdown catch in overtime to defeat the Vikings 36-30 in overtime. But he couldn't escape coach Lovie Smith's doghouse in 2010 and finished the year with
10 catches for 149 yards.Terms of the deal have not been reported.
The Vikings also released defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Cutting Kennedy clears $2.5 million off the Vikings' salary cap.
The Vikings were reportedly $4-7 million over the cap before parting ways with Kennedy, who played in only nine games last season.
The Vikings signed Kentucky running back Derrick Locke this morning, kicking off free agency after the 130-day

lockout ended Monday.

Locke, considered one of the top 10 undrafted rookie free agents, rushed for 887 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. He also was impressive at the NFL Combine, running a 4.37 40-yard dash. But a spine injury scared some teams off in the draft process, according to reports.
"I did have several offers, but I just want to come in and compete - nothing more, nothing less," said Locke via text message. "I'm grateful for the opportunity."
The Vikings are expected to sign Ohio State cornerback Devon Torrence, Hillsdale wide receiver Andre Holmes, Arizona offensive guard Conan Amituanai and Utah running back Matt Asiata. Other rookie free agents who reportedly have agreed to deals with Minnesota include Iowa tight end Allen Reisner, Miami cornerback Ryan Hill, UTEP offensive guard Rod Huntley, Cal Poly wide receiver Dominique Johnson, Wyoming cornerback Marcell Gipson and N.C. State defensive end David Akinniyi.
Holmes, who is 6 feet 4, reportedly runs a 4.45 40, but could be the ideal developmental guy for the Vikings.
Vikings vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman estimates the team will sign "almost 30 bodies" in order to get close to a 90-player roster to start camp. The Vikings must do this while finding a way to restructure contracts to get under the $120.4 million salary cap before the start of the league year on Aug. 4.
Vann McElroy, the agent for Ben Leber, said Minnesota is Leber's first choice, but "I don't know if they have the money or the cap space to do it."
The Vikings also need to sign a kicker and are trying to sign free agent wide receiver Sidney Rice to a deal as well.
In other football news, at least 17 Vikings appeared at the team's Winter Park facility today to meet with coaches and possibly work out. Wide receiver Percy Harvin was the first player in the door shortly after 9 a.m. Others included quarterback Christian Ponder, offensive guard Steve Hutchinson, cornerback Cedric Griffin, linebacker E.J. Henderson and tight end Kyle Rudolph.

Psoriasis Can't Keep Kim Down

Psoriasis

Psoriasis Can't Keep Kim Down

Tonight on Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Kim was diagnosed with psoriasis. While not as scary as the ringworm Khloe suspected it was, the disease is that, understandably hit Kim hard.
Psoriasis Kim KardashianFor all her seeming perfection, being diagnosed with this incurable disease that shows itself in red, scaly patches on the skin, was shocking but also really brave of Kim to share her condition with the world. I am sure knowing of her experienice will comfort some others who suffer from it as well. So good for her, but shame on Kris Jenner for her whole reaction to Kim's diagnosis.

I do not know if they are intentionally trying to make Kris look like an insensitive, money-hungry madwoman who cares less about her daughters' feelings than making a buck, but they are doing it well.

As a sufferer herself, you would think she would have been more sympathetic to Kim's concern, but instead she laughed when Kim showed her the psoriasis

Just the warm, motherly reaction you'd hope for from your own mother. Even better were comforting words like, "Oh my gosh yours is SO bad" & then pointing out how hard it was going to be for Kim because she's still dating & it was easier for her because she was married when she was diagnosed herself. Thank you, mom?
In addition to her entire career, Kim was worried about a specific commercial she shoot she was doing the next day when her body was covered with psoriasis. Kris had little sympathy & told Kim she was blowing the whole thing "out of proportion"  - there was a commission for her at stake, dammit.
"You are going to have to suck it up," she told her. After fighting with Kim about it, she stormed out. “You are so rude," she shouted. "Call me when you calm down, princess.”
Uh, who's rude?

For someone whose entire career has been based on her looks, I'd say for an incurable disease like this Kim's reaction was actually pretty calm. While there are some treatments, there is no cure, & it can get extremely bad in some cases.
Fortunately Kim  decided not to let psoriasis keep her out the spotlight. Her makeup artist was able to cover the spots successfully, & the shoot went off without a hitch.

The only downer was that Kris got her way in the end again. "I am just happy that we got it all back where it needs to be, & I am getting my 10 percent,” she said.
Hope it is worth it, Kris.

John Boehner

John Boehner Leaves Debt Ceiling Talks With Obama

John Boehner Debt Ceiling

WASHINGTON (AP/The Huffington Post)
House Speaker John Boehner has broken off talks with President Barack Obama on getting a budget deal to avert a government default.
The Ohio Republican says the president desires to raise taxes high & would not make "fundamental changes" to benefit programs such as Medicare.

President Obama, speaking at a press conference at the White House, told reporters that Boehner would not return his phone calls. "I have been left at the altar now a couple of times," Obama said.

"It is hard to understand why Speaker Boehner would walk away from this type of deal," Obama said. "Can they say yes to anything?"

Obama called on congressional leaders to attend a meeting at the White House at 11 a.m. Saturday morning.
"We have run out of time and they are going to have to explain to me how we're going to avoid a default."
"I expect them to have an answer in terms of how they intend to get this thing done in the course of the next week. The American people expect action," Obama said.
Story continues below
Top GOP aides say Boehner will now work with Senate leaders on an alternative aimed at averting a market-rattling, first-ever federal default.
HuffPost's Sam Stein, Ryan Grim, and Jennifer Bendery report on why the talks fell apart:
Where the two sides remained apart were on Medicaid cuts, with Republicans demanding tens of billions of dollars more in cuts than the president was comfortable making. White House officials described that difference as possible to overcome, however. The revenue component, in the end, remained unbridgeable. According to senior White House officials, each side had agreed to pass tax reform down the road that would result in $800 billion in revenue generated -- the equivalent amount of savings that would be achieved if the top-end Bush tax cuts were simply allowed to expire. The administration wanted $400 billion in revenues on top of that. Republicans wanted zero, and in statements on Friday night GOP leadership aides insisted that the White House had changed the contours of the negotiations by making that demand in recent days.
Obama offered to move off that $400 billion mark should GOP leadership lessen the type of cuts to entitlement programs they were demanding, White House aides said.
In addition, the two sides could not figure out what to do if that aspirational tax reform package wasn't achieved.

"It is disappointing that the talks with the White House didn't reach a favorable conclusion, & I appreciate the Speaker insisting on reduced spending and opposing the President's call for higher taxes on American families and job creators," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in a statement. "It's similarly disappointing that the White House has refused to join Republicans in our effort to cut Washington spending now, cap runaway spending in the future and save our entitlement programs and our country from bankruptcy by requiring the nation to balance its budget. Speaker Boehner has informed us that he will work on a new path forward with Leader Reid to develop a solution that will prevent default, without job killing tax hikes, while substantially reducing Washington spending."
McConnell added, "As I have said before, it is time now for the debate to move out of a room in the White House & on to the House and Senate floors where we can debate the best approach to reducing the nation's unsustainable debt."
Friday morning, a source familiar with the negotiations told HuffPost's Michael McAuliffe & Jennifer Bendery that he suspected the talks would eventually fail & the McConnell plan would move, shifting the unpalatable responsibility for cutting and lifting the debt cap to President Obama.
"No one wants to punt until default is the only other option," the Democratic aide said.
Boehner sent the following letter to House Members & staff on Friday night:
Dear Colleague, Our economy is not creating enough jobs, and the policies coming out of Washington are a big reason why. Because of Washington, we have a tax code that is stifling job creation. Because of Washington, we have a debt crisis that is sowing uncertainty and sapping the confidence of small businesses. Because of Washington, our children are financing a government spending binge that is jeopardizing their future. Since the moment I became Speaker, I've urged President Obama to lock arms with me and seize this moment to do something significant to address these challenges. I've urged him to partner with congressional Republicans to do something dramatic to change the fiscal trajectory of our country. . .something that will boost confidence in our economy, renew a measure of faith in our institutions of government, and help small businesses get back to creating jobs.
The House this week passed such a plan. . .the Cut, Cap & Balance Act, which passed the House with bipartisan support.

Along with Majority Leader Cantor, I have also engaged the president in a dialogue in recent days. The purpose of this dialogue was to see if we could identify a path forward that would implement the principles of Cut, Cap, & Balance in a manner that could secure bipartisan support and be signed into law.
During these discussions - as in my earlier discussions - it became evident that the White House is simply not serious about ending the spending binge that is destroying jobs and endangering our children's future.
A deal was never reached, and was never really close.
In the end, we couldn't connect. Not because of different personalities, but because of different visions for our country.
The president is emphatic that taxes have to be raised. As a former small businessman, I know tax increases destroy jobs.
The president is adamant that we cannot make fundamental changes to our entitlement programs. As the father of two daughters, I know these programs won't be there for their generation unless significant action is taken now.
For these reasons, I have decided to end discussions with the White House and begin conversations with the leaders of the Senate in an effort to find a path forward.

The Democratic leaders of the House and Senate have not been participants in the conversations I and Leader Cantor have had with the White House; nor have the Republican leaders of the Senate. But I believe there is a shared commitment on both sides of the aisle to producing legislation that will serve the best interests of our country in the days ahead - legislation that reflects the will of the American people, consistent with the principles of the Cut, Cap, & Balance Act that passed the House with bipartisan support this week.
I wanted to alert you to these developments as soon as possible. Further information will be coming as soon as it is available. It is an honor to serve with you. Together, we will do everything in our power to end the spending binge in Washington and help our economy get back to creating jobs.
Sincerely,
John Boehner

Harry Reid released the following statement Friday evening :
"Republicans have once again proven unable to overcome their ideological opposition to ending taxpayer-funded giveaways for millionaires, corporate jet owners and oil companies. I applaud President Obama for insisting that any deal to reduce our deficit be balanced between cuts and revenues. We must avert a default at all costs, so it is time to reengage in bipartisan talks on an agreement that at least accomplishes that goal. I agree with President Obama that a short-term extension is unacceptable."

Eve has already used HD Dual Foundation and Pressed Powder to match our model's face to the rest of her body, covering up her rosacea without making her skin look chalky. Take a fan brush and sweep it across all three colors: the pink blush, the peach blush, and the bronzer. Hold the Fan brush parallel to your jawline and apply the blush across the cheek in a back-and-forth motion, keeping the color high on the cheek area. If you are not sure where to apply the blush, simply smile and apply directly to the apples of your cheeks. NOTE: Try not to use large/thick blush brushes, they tend to pick up too much color, causing you to spend just as much time wiping off the blush as you did putting it on.

Applying blush is the final highlight of Eve Pearl's technique of Reverse Contouring. Eve's technique defines the cheekbone without having to generate an unnatural shadow beneath it (which actually ends up giving a more rounded appearance or if done wrong, leaves you looking like you have dirt on your face). By applying the blush on the apples of your cheeks and sweeping it upwards towards the eyes, it actually brings the focus higher on the face and gives the appearance of a face lift. The result is a youthful and beaming face with natural-looking color placement. And that is what makeup is meant to help us generate...a natural-looking, healthy glow!

Borders is Toast, But Do not Blame E-Books

And so it ends. Borders, which went bankrupt and announced designs to close hundreds of stores last February, is going to finish the job. Hilco Consumer Capital and Gordon Brothers are purchasing what is left of the chain, and plan to liquidate the 399 remaining stores and lay off 11,000 employees. (The companies focus on purchasing up once-mighty brands: they also acquired Polaroid and The Sharper Picture.)

It's tempting to blame e-books for Borders' death. Amazon released the first Kindle in 2007; Barnes & Noble, while slow to respond, came up with the Nook two years later. Borders, however, only dabbled in e-books-selling Sony e-readers at first (via kiosks that shoppers always seemed to ignore when I checked) and more recently partnering with Canadian e-book company Kobo. The last time I was in a Borders, which was last week, the first thing I encountered when I entered was a great big table of Kobo readers. But it was clearly far too little, far too late.

But while the rise of the Kindle and its competitors may have helped do the chain in, it clearly didn't start its death spiral. Borders been ailing for years-and shuttering stores along the way-and its strategies for getting healthy usually seemed to make things worse. I mean it wasn't until 2007 that it decided that it made sense to have its own Web site rather than to outsource online sales to archival Amazon.com.

While Borders was busy giving the Web and e-books short shrift , it was also doubling down on the notoriously tricky business of running brick-and-mortar superstores. Until late 2010, San Francisco had four Borders stores-three of which were within a mile and a half of each other. I'm no retailing genius, but I couldn't figure out how the city could support so many giant bookstores in so little space. Now we know it couldn't: the three ones that were practically neighbors are all gone now, and the last store will close as part of the final shutdown.

(Borders' smarter rival, Barnes & Noble, only had one store in San Francisco, although that, too, is now gone; there will be no major chain bookstores in the city once the last Borders is history. We're lucky, though-a bunch of excellent independent stores which managed to survive the Borders/Barnes & Noble era are still with us.)

Bottom line: If e-books didn't exist, I am positive that Borders would have still collapsed in much the same way. It might have cratered even if the Net had seldom been invented. I am sorry to see it go, & sorry for the fogeys who will be out of work. But the market worked. Borders is dying because it basically wasn't excellent at selling books in the 21st century.

World Cup final: A stunning win for Japan, a new world for women's soccer

World Cup final: A stunning win for Japan, a new world for women's soccer
There is a query that very every soccer coach answers after very every game, whether or not he is asked it directly:

Did your team deserve to win?
It is, on one hand, a ridiculous question. But Japan's victory in penalty kicks after the Women's World Cup final against the US ended 2-2 is a reminder of why the question is so often top of mind after a soccer match – and particularly one of this magnitude.

On one hand, what Japan accomplished was historic in ways well beyond the obvious.

Coming back – twice – against an American team that is ranked No. 1 in the world and was playing arguably its best game of the tournament is simply not something that would ever have been conceivable in women’s soccer, perhaps even a month ago. But this Women’s World Cup has changed the game utterly, and likely irrevocably.

In soccer terms, the queen is dead. Japan has stormed the Bastille. Insert your revolutionary metaphor here.

And yet there is also no point in suggesting that Japan was the better team, because it was not. Yes, after the 30th minute, the Japanese game did improve, but the team was never truly equals with the US either in the quality of its possession or the danger it created going forward.

And what of those first 30 minutes? The American women left 100 yards of scorched earth behind their furiously churning heels. The US could have scored four and the scoreline would not have flattered them.

Far more than the three missed US penalty kicks or the last-minute Japanese heroics, the game was lost then, when it was not even a third over.

And that is the curious thing about soccer – the blessing to those who love it and the curse to those who do not.

A goal is a miraculous thing.

In the aftermath of the final, one must ask: How did the United States not score? How many posts must be hit, how many near-misses must happen, before eventually, surely, someone must score?

The American first half seemed a scientific test of that very idea.

The chances came from every conceivable player and angle. Carli Lloyd rampaging through the center of the park. Lauren Cheney teasing the Japanese back line with clever runs. Megan Rapinoe dictating play with the full range of her skill set – speed, passing, and two devastating feet.

What can be said of the Japanese is that they did not allow Abby Wambach’s head anywhere near the goal. For 104 minutes, they limited the best header of the ball – perhaps in men’s or women’s soccer – to a single half-chance in the middle of the 18-yard box, falling backward, with a defender virtually sharing her jersey.

She still almost scored.

But in that is perhaps a lesson for these Americans – and the rest of the soccer world. The sum total of the Japanese game plan was to neutralize Abby Wambach’s aerial threat. And until Alex Morgan entered in the second half – and in the 69th minute scored a goal from a chance more difficult than many her teammates had spurned earlier – that game plan was working by the only measure that mattered: the scoreline.

If that is an implicit rebuke of the US women not named Abby or Alex, it is also another historic achievement for Japan. Before the Women’s World Cup began, not many teams of Japan’s meager pedigree could have withstood an onslaught of such proportions.

Yes, the Americans should have scored, but even amid the storm, Japan never collapsed, never dissolved into a shambolic wreck, never huddled by the corner flag chewing their hair. They fought, and when the US let them off the hook, they got back to something approaching level terms for the final 90 minutes of regulation and extra time.

This, too, has no real precedent in the women’s game. An underdog holding its nerve when heaven and earth and Rapinoe were pelting it with shots and crosses that rained like brimstone.

There is, of course, a rightness in this that goes well beyond soccer – that the women of a nation that has been made to endure so much, themselves endured, and won.

If the first Japanese comeback was an American gift – Aya Miyama poking home in the 81st minute after some ruinous US defending – then the second was straight from the heart and soul of the country.

Just as America saw Wambach at last free herself from her full-time shadow, the outstanding Saki Kumagai, in the 104th minute, Japan saw its greatest player rise precisely when it needed her most.

Homare Sawa had been made a spectator for most of the game. Unable to break down an American midfield playing with the speed and tenacity of the furies, the Japanese were often forced to bypass Sawa completely, punting the ball down the field to escape the American swarm.

To see the Japanese, a team built on possessing and passing the ball, reduced to a game of kick-it-hard-and-hope, was perhaps the most impressive – though least heralded – American achievement of the day.

Then, in the 115th minute, Sawa drifted into a rare patch of open space at midfield. In two touches, she changed the game, and the history of women’s soccer.

The first touch was a pass that split the American defense, falling onto the shoetop of a streaking Yukari Kinga, who saw her chip cleared off the goal line.

Sawa’s second touch, a deft flick on the resulting corner kick, arrowed the ball into the American goal, setting up penalty kicks, which Japan won, 3-1.

For women’s soccer, it was the fulfillment of a remarkable tournament – the maturation of the game into something it had not been before.

For Japan, it was the hope of a nation distilled in to 21 females who, for weeks, provided instruction in how to accomplish something that no thought feasible.

& for the US, it was the kind of rough justice that perhaps only soccer can provide. For the first time in games, the American females clearly outplayed their opponent, & for the first time in games, they lost.

A sign is seen for the 405 freeway in
Los Angeles, California July 14, 2011.
"Carmageddon" is the name Los Angeles
residents are giving the likely epic traffic
tie-up that will result when a 10-mile (16-km)
stretch of the 405 Freeway is closed for
construction, including the demolition of
the bridge, from Friday night to Monday
morning between two of the nation's
busiest interchanges.

Dubbed continued ago as “Carmageddon,” the 53-hour cease of 10 afar of Interstate 405 begins Friday some time about 7 p.m. and is appointed to end Monday at 5 a.m.

Early Friday morning, media vans from every above account base lined the abandon of this amplitude of freeway that commonly accommodates a half-million cars on any accustomed weekend. But the advertising started continued ago.
Last month, the Los Angeles Police Department asked celebrities to join in its public service announcement strategy by tweeting the news of the closure to their fans.
Ashton Kutcher was the first celebrity to oblige more than two weeks ago. “LAPD askd me 2tweet: 405fwy btwn 10 & 101 will b closed July16-17. In xchange I would like a free pass on that stoplight tickt IT WAS YELLOW.”
Since then, other Hollywood types have joined the Carmaggedon Twitter search feed.
Like us on Facebook
“This weekend, LA! Avoid Carmageddon, Gas-zilla, 405-enstein, Grid-lock-apalooza! STAY HOME. Eat & shop local!” Tom Hanks posted on Twitter.
Paris Hilton tweeted: “Hey LA, who's scared of Carmageddon? I'm not leaving my house to drive anywhere this weekend."
Hollywood newcomer actress Khaneshia Smith referred to the fact that many will stay at home and do nothing. She tweeted: “Everyone is forced to respect the Sabbath #carmaggedon.”
“It would be so ironic if Armageddon happened during Carmageddon," tweeted Office star Rainn Wilson.
Businesses in Los Angeles have restructured their normal weekend advertising campaigns to fit this very moment. Many businesses are offering “Carmageddon Specials.”
JetBlue offered Long Beach to Burbank flights, bypassing the 405 altogether, for $4. The flights were quickly sold out. O'Neill, a sportswear store in Santa Monica, is offering a 40.5 percent off sale.
Hotels and resorts are also running hot with specials and discounts tied into the Carmageddon theme. Travel and Leisure reports that Terranea, in Rancho Palos Verdes, is “offering refugees of the shutdown” a third night for 40.5 percent off the rack rate with their “405 Freeway Package.”
Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows in Santa Monica has a “Live Like a Local” package (overnight parking included) with rates from $405 a night. Booking two nights this weekend at the Hotel Palomar, in Westwood gets you $40.05 in dining credits and free parking.
The closure takes place between Interstate 10 and U.S. 101, where freeway crews will add a carpool lane and demolish half of the Mulholland Bridge at the top of Sepulveda Pass. The question remains in Southern California as to whether a total commuter meltdown will occur.
"One of our interesting mysteries as transportation researchers is that traffic just disappears,” USC professor Gen Giulano told ABC’s Los Angeles station. “Sometimes, we don't know where it goes. In the case of the 10 (section of L.A. freeway once shut down for three months), people chose alternate routes but they also just avoided the area. Again, they just adapted their travel to be able to avoid the worst of what they were thinking would happen."
Perhaps FOX News Los Angeles anchorman Phil Shuman, who has been advertisement on the arena all week, summed it up best on the station's account appearance Friday morning. "We aloof don't know," Shuman said.
One affair is certain, Hollywood will accept it covered.
