Coming up tonight on Dateline NBC

When a 14-year old girl from Utah disappeared in June 2002, people assumed the worst. All too often, that's how these stories end. But Elizabeth Smart wrote a different ending. And this month, she closed the book.

The man convicted of kidnapping her is almost certainly going to spend the rest of his life in prison. And, more than seven years after her rescue, and after finally revealing the day-to-day details of her captivity, Elizabeth Smart is truly free. And then, the story of another family seeking justice, but they are still waiting. This case centers on an American entrepreneur with a love for adventure, who became the target of a strange plot, half a world away. It's a crime investigators believe they've solved. So why are the suspects still walking free? Chris Hansen with Trouble in Paradise.
