Overheard on Morning Joe
Obama rose above the fray
President ObamaJoe Scarborough: "A cynic at home might say, 'How could a president not gain advantage from an event like this politically?'... but I've just got to say, I'm being very honest, I measure this up to what Bill Clinton did after Oklahoma City. And Bill Clinton, while he brought a lot of Americans together, he also took the opportunity to use it go after some of his political enemies. Barack Obama did not go there. And I hope that conservatives who are looking to attack this president take note of that fact. That he rose above the fray..."

Tom Brokaw: "He [the president] set the right tone and hit all the right notes. There's nothing in the Constitution or in codified legislation that defines this as a part of the presidential responsbility, but we very often define presidencies by these moments... Last night addressed what is on the minds of a lot people in this country... Republicans, Democrats and independents alike -- they long for the kind of message that the president gave last night." Noonan on Reagan's line 'Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall'
Peggy Noonan, former speechwriter to President Reagan: "It was from a text for that important trip to Berlin... a wonderful writer named Peter Robinson worked on it. He sent it in a text to the president. The State Dept. saw it the NSC saw it. They went crazy, their heads exploded, their shoulders went on fire. [laughter] They took it out. Reagan would put it in. They took it out. Finally at the end, the speechwriters would put it in the State would take it out. Finally Reagan put it back in, they said, 'Mr. President, what you're saying,"Tear down this wall," is provocative." And Reagan said in response more or less, 'Oh I mean to provoke' ... [laughter]." Watch video of Noonan and Pat Buchanan discussing last night's speech, and recalling details behind Reagan's remarkable speeches.
