Hollywood Undead dispense with any pleasantries and go right for the throat on their new album, American Tragedy.

It is an approach that serves them well though as the band's follow-up to their gold-selling debut Swan Songs is a masterpiece in its own right. In lieu of breaking and bending to pressures of the zeitgeist or snapping in to Swan Songs three, Hollywood Undead built a darker, deeper, and far deadlier ride this time around. It all starts with a trip downstairs too
American Tragedy's opener "Been To Hell" grinds from an industrial chug in to a hauntingly catchy chorus. J-Dog spits vitriol as the production edges in to Downward Spiral territory perfectly complemented by his comrades' verses. "Apologize" is a wiseass bitch-slap to detractors, haters, and posers worldwide. There is an ear to ear shit-eating grin on Danny's face as they perfectly croons, "But they can harmonize, even if they sound like shite." That is the irony. His voice reverberates incredibly on a song that is bound to get the club popping, while making fun of it. There is wit and wisdom from Charlie Scene on "Comin' In Hot" and a beat that is prepared for any dance floor as L.A.'s industrial steam-punk Wu-Tang Clan raps and rolls through hilarious verbal jab after another. Comic Man's raps still stand out with a hilarious bravado and braggadocio few MCs in any phase of the game can match, and

"I Don't Want to Die" bleeds with a raw fury reminiscent of early Nine Inch Nails as the refrain "I don't want to die, so you are going to have to" rings through the bowels of every city's underbelly. There's moments that make this album a classic though. The first comes in the coursework of "Bullet." After an acoustic intro, the song tells a potent and poignant story of longing for suicide. However, it is the sunniest and catchiest tune on American Tragedy. That is where Hollywood Undead's genius lies in that risky space between unforgettable and unsettling. Johnny two Tears rips open his soul much like Jonathan Davis here. However, two Tears offers even more catharsis on "Pour Me." It is a story about the loneliness of boozing and using, but it is got a heavenly hook. In lots of ways, it is Hollywood Undead's equivalent of Eminem's "Stan"- an wicked power ballad that everybody who hears it will feel.

"Tendencies" is a homicidal electro rocker that shocks and shakes, but be sure to pick up the deluxe edition in order to listen to the ominous elegy for the American Dream - "S.C.A.V.A." The economy's shite. Traditional conventions have been raped by reality TV show. There is no guidance from the political infrastructure. However, there is nothing tragic about American Tragedy, and as the world burns, Hollywood Undead are throwing the party to finish all parties.
