Kids encouraged to never give up, just like Sammy Sloth

Even sloths can excel at sports.

That's what former Iowa State University football player Ryan Sloth told Waukee Elementary School students on Monday.

Sloth said he wants children to learn not to give up when they face obstacles.

"I give that message — keep trying. They may not be good at one sport, one area. Keep trying until you find somewhere that fits you," said Sloth, who is now a coach for the Iowa Barnstormers.

To spread his message, Sloth published a children's book called "Sammy Sloth: Sport Superstar."
Yes, the protagonist in Sloth's book is a sloth.

"I love sports, so I definitely wanted to theme my book around sports," Sloth told the children. "And I know kids love animals, so I was going to make all my characters animals. I made my main character a sloth. You know why I picked a sloth?"

"'Cause your last name is Sloth!" the Waukee students shouted.

"Exactly, my last name is Sloth. So I knew a little bit about sloths. All my family, all my relatives, they're all Sloths. I figured I'd put them in there," Sloth said.
In the book, young Sammy Sloth struggles with sports like basketball and swimming because he is "too slow." His mother, based on Sloth's own mother, lovingly encourages him not to give up.

Eventually, Sammy Sloth finds his niche in golf, a sport where his lack of speed turns out to be beneficial.

"Sammy Sloth practiced and practiced every day," Sloth read. "He won big golf trophies and became a golf superstar."

Tarush Bhatia, 7, of Waukee said he liked the book "because Sammy Sloth kept on trying and trying and never gave up."
The students were also enamored by Sloth's stories about his days as a football player.

Sloth showed the students old helmets, jerseys and a ring he received after ISU won the Insight.com Bowl in 2000.

"I liked when he shared about his helmets," said Hannah Little, 7, of Waukee.

Sloth grew up in Belmond, in northern Iowa, where he participated in many sports but excelled at football.

He played cornerback for the Cyclones from 1996-2000.

Sloth, now of Des Moines, has also worked in films. He appeared in "We Are Marshall" and "Leatherheads." One of his most recent movies is "Spiderman 4."
Sloth told the first-graders that meeting Spiderman was "really cool."

"He threw the football so hard, hit the goal post and broke it," Sloth said. "So we tried to get him to come play football for us, to be our quarterback, but he said he was too busy."
