La Russa battling lingering case of pinkeye
ST. LOUIS -- Cardinals manager Tony La Russa is ambidextrous with a case of conjunctivitis, or "pinkeye," in his appropriate eye and may be aggressive the action for addition brace of weeks."They said sometimes it's 10 days, two weeks," La Russa said Tuesday. Pair of injured hurlers express optimism
ST. LOUIS -- Cardinals pitchers Brian Tallet and Bryan Augenstein both expressed optimism Tuesday regarding their recovery from injuries suffered last week in Arizona, but it appears that both pitchers will be out for more than the minimum 15 days.
Tallet underwent surgery to place two screws in his right hand, a procedure he hopes will speed his recovery. He is able to play catch and expects to throw off a mound soon, because the injury is to his non-throwing hand.
"The surgery went well, the screws are in place, the bone is where it needs to be," Tallet said. "So now it's just a matter of the healing process and just making it safe enough for me to go out on the field and protect myself and be able to be effective without having to worry about whether a ball is going to be hit at me."
Augenstein has not begun playing catch and still displays something of a limp when he walks in the clubhouse. His timetable, like Tallet's, is uncertain.
"It's going to depend on how my leg keeps responding," he said. "I haven't really tested it yet. I don't think they really want me to yet. So it's probably going to be a little bit more."
Baby 'birds
• Mark Hamilton had a single, a double and two walks in his last game before being promoted to the Majors, but Triple-A Memphis lost to Iowa, 5-2, on Monday.
• Ryan Jackson went 3-for-4 in Double-A Springfield's 5-3 win over Midland. Scott Schneider pitched six solid innings, allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
• Rainel Rosario stayed hot with two more hits in Class A Palm Beach's 5-2 loss to Charlotte.
• Kevin Siegrist pitched five shutout innings to help Class A Quad Cities beat Peoria, 4-2. Siegrist allowed three hits and three walks, striking out four.
Jackson wins player of the day honors for keeping up his torrid start. He had two doubles, a single and two RBIs in the win. Through Monday's games, Jackson was hitting .447 with a .471 on-base percentage and a .596 slugging percentage. Considered an excellent defender at shortstop, Jackson was a fifth-round pick by the Cardinals in the 2009 Draft.
