The National Biologic Take Back Day in Bradley Canton was alleged off aftermost ages due to the baleful tornadoes that tore through the canton April 27.

In ablaze of those contest the Bradley Canton Sheriff’s Office, in affiliation with the GRABB coalition, launched a weeklong decree biologic takeback event.
“We collected a lot more than I had anticipated,” said Bob Gault, public information officer with the BCSO.

In total the takeback collected more than 20 pounds of prescription pills. That weight is only the pills; no bottles or containers were weighed.

According to Gault, that number does not even reflect the liquid medications that were turned in.

“This was a great initiative to help get a lot of prescription drugs properly disposed of and out of the reach of local youth,” said Joyce Vanderpool, program coordinator with the GRABB coalition. The name stands for Going Respectfully Against Addictive Behavior.

For many years people were instructed to flush their unwanted medications down the toilet, according to Vanderpool. However, this has resulted in an elevated level of pollution in water sources, and agencies are actively turning away from that disposal method.

Instead, the only truly safe disposal method is to incinerate the prescriptions. Programs like Drug Take Back Day allow for the quick, easy and anonymous turnover of medications.

According to the DEA’s website more Americans currently abuse prescription drugs than the number of those using cocaine, hallucinogens and heroin combined.

“Where are these drugs coming from? Family and friends’ medicine cabinets,” explained Vanderpool.

She encourages everyone to keep medications locked away, and is pushing for those selling houses and showing houses to make sure medications are secure before other people enter the house.

“Pills are so easy to steal. If you take a few out of the bottle no one is going to know. It’s so important to keep these medications locked up constantly. Even if you think there is no chance someone could take them,” stated Vanderpool.

Those involved with the Drug Take Back were so pleased with the results that another take back day will be scheduled sometime in September.

“We are hoping for this next takeback to happen on a weekend, so those individuals who couldn’t get out during the week can utilize the service,” Vanderpool said.
