White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett: "If you look back at the rearview mirror, because we moved forward on the tax deal a couple of weeks ago, we were able to get "don't ask, don't tell." We were able to get the START treaty. We were able to get the bill for the 9/11 workers. We were able to get so many other productive measures out of Congress because we didn't spend the entire session arguing over something that we knew ultimately we were not going to win."
