With the advent of two-car design, choose a favorite place for 53rd Daytona 500 is an almost impossible task. Cars were closer than ever in speed, and resolve will come to that drive, which in the last round.

Still, there are some drivers who have established themselves as favorites today.

“If you look at the past 10 plate races, there’s been like three guys who have won every one of them,” said Jamie McMurray, the 2010 Daytona 500 winner and one of the best restrictor-plate racers out there. “I think it’s hard to pick a favorite, but I think there is some coincidence there, that the same people have ended up in the front.”

With that in mind, here’s who to watch this year:

1. KEVIN HARVICK — The 2007 Daytona 500 winner and two-time Budweiser Shootout champion, Harvick won two of the four plate races last year and finished second and fourth in the other two.

“We’re comfortable with where we are at with our car and just with the type of racing and the conditions that we are racing in,” said Harvick. “You just got to put yourself, keep yourself in position to be able to win, so that’s what we’ve been trying to do and hopefully it plays out for us on Sunday.”

2. TONY STEWART — On Saturday, Stewart won his fourth consecutive NASCAR Nationwide Series February race at Daytona and he figures to be tough today, too.

“I’ve got Saturday figured out,” said the two-time Sprint Cup champ. “I just can’t figure out Sunday. We’ve had really good luck in the Nationwide Series at this race and we’ve always been able to get ourselves close to the front when we needed to and sort it out from there.”

3. KURT BUSCH — With victories in the Budweiser Shootout and his Gatorade Duel, Busch suddenly vaulted from the ranks of contender to one of the favorites.

“This Daytona 500 is what we came here for,” Busch said. “The tokens that we have with the Shootout and the Gatorade are nice, but we’re here after the big ultimate prize.”

4. JAMIE MCMURRAY — The affable McMurray is always a threat to win any restrictor-plate race he’s in. And his Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Chevrolet has been fast.

“It has been a good week,” said McMurray. “I was happy with how our car performed in the Bud Shootout. ... “It is amazing to me how much it has changed in just the last two years with the paving of the tracks; just how different plate racing is now than what it was three or four years ago.”

5. DALE EARNHARDT JR. — If he hadn’t crashed his primary car in Daytona 500 practice, Earnhardt Jr. would be the favorite. As it is, he’ll have to start the race from the back of the field in a back-up car.

“The backup car is fine, just as good as the other ones,” said Earnhardt. “They are all kit cars any ways. The bodies are all the same. Good motors. We'll have plenty of speed, but we have this car; the third car, the fourth car is just as good. I mean, they are all good.”

6. JEFF GORDON — The pairing of Gordon and new crew chief Alan Gustafson seems to be a good one, with the four-time champion showing strength during Speedweeks. Gordon will start today’s race from the outside of Row 1.

“I’ve had a blast working with Alan,” said Gordon. “He’s very intense and very focused. I feel like our personalities match-up well. He’s all business. And when I get to the race track, that’s how I like it to be. They’ve just built really great race cars for us over the winter and have worked really hard. It’s great to be on the front row for the Daytona 500.”

7. CARL EDWARDS — Many pundits believe the Ford FR9 engine has superior cooling ability, which could be a huge advantage over 500 miles today. And Edwards has been the best of the Ford racers so far.

“I still don’t think we have taxed these engines long enough to know where the breaking point is,” said Edwards. “We will find that out Sunday. Guys will be running right at the upper limit of temperature and RPM’s and I think engine failures will become a big part of the race. That FR9 engine seems to be one that can stay cooler, which is great.”

8. CLINT BOWYER — All four of the Richard Childress Racing cars have been stout during Speedweeks. Bowyer has finished second in both his Gatorade Duel and Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race.

“I think the 500 is going to be good for us,” said Bowyer. “Our cars are all fast. We work well together as a team; and doing a good job of managing everything. I think the results have spoken for themselves.”

9. JEFF BURTON — Already, Burton was earned his first Speedweeks victory, winning his Gatorade Duel. There’s no reason to expect he won’t be up front again today.

“We've done this tandem thing before, but never with this much,” said Burton. “So we're all learning a lot and we're learning quickly. If you're not learning, you're going to be left behind because it is a different kind of an art to make this happen.”

10. MICHAEL WALTRIP — The semi-retired Waltrip might finally have exorcized the demons haunting him ever since Earnhardt’s death with Friday night’s emotional NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory. Another win today would be indescribable.

“Ten years ago I stood here and I thought it was the greatest day ever and it turned out to be the worst day ever,” said Waltrip. “I just wanted to come back here this year and honor Dale and thank him and give his fans something to cheer for.”
