Cracks Up Audience at Oscars
Kirk Douglas, 94, Cracks Up Audience at Oscars
Academy Awards down to start life with a third award of the night, Best Supporting Actress. First, the acting legend Kirk Douglas vamped a storm as a presenter, first flirting with co-host Anne Hathaway - "Where were you when I'm making a movie?" - and then revealed the winner to extend the length of comics with extended riff about how Australians Hugh Jackman laughs at schtick Douglas', but not Brit Colin Firth. "I do not know why everyone in Australia thinks I'm funny."Finally, Douglas revealed The Fighter‘s Melissa Leo had won the Oscar, her first win after being nominated two years ago for Best Actress in Frozen River. “Yeah, I am kinda speechless,” Leo said, looking up to the third balcony of the Kodak Theatre. “When I watched Kate [Winslet] two years ago, it looked so f—ing easy!” The ABC time-delay censors were quick on the trigger, however, and all the national viewing audience heard from Leo was silence, followed by the roaring laughter of the audience and Leo’s stunned expression. But the Oscar winner soldiered on, thanking the Academy for acknowledging great work, holding her statue triumphantly in the air.
He makes Anne Hathaway blush and calls out Colin Firth for never laughing.
Kirk Douglas, 94, made a rare appearance, presenting best supporting actress at the 83rd annual Academy Awards Sunday, and he had the audience cracking up.
Before introducing the nominees, he told host James Franco he looked better out of the cave, a funny reference to Franco's film 127 Hours.
He then praised Franco's Oscar co-host Anne Hathaway.
"She's gorgeous!," Douglas gushed, causing Hathaway to blow him kisses. "Where were you when I was making pictures?"
He also made a few jokes on the Hugh Jackman to always laugh and poke fun at Colin Firth to never laugh ("He's British!" denounced him).
He then opened the envelope, but continues to delay announcing the winner, causing the audience to crack up.
He finally announced the winners: Melissa Leo, for The Fighter.
"You're much more beautiful than you at The Fighter!" he told me.
"You're not so bad yourself ... what do you do in the future?" Leo jokingly asked.
