Hotel Swimming Pool Ideas for Safety and Revenue

Hotel Swimming Pool

Hotels are often some of the best-designed locations we can visit. Sometimes they can be more than the worst. Many hotel and paid accommodation swimming pools cost a lot to maintain, and go under-utilized. A swimming pool can make or break how your customers feel about your hotel. Here are some useful ideas that will put any of your customers in a great mood, and turn your swimming pool area into a cash machine.
Areas and Separation. It is always a good idea to separate types of people in your hotel swimming pool to make the most out of it. If you don’t have more than one pool, breaking it up is your solution. Families and other entertainment don’t always mix. Both are very important to your business. Allow different areas for different purposes when necessary.
Entertainment Area. Hotels can make great money from holding smaller events. Some of the hotels I have visited in Dubai make huge money from regular ‘clubbing events’. These hotels are all 5 star, just in case you were wondering. And yes, they make a lot of money from more than weekly ‘dance’ styled parties. Having the features to incorporate a dance floor, stage and lighting, will certainly boost business. Look at sound reduction issues if they are necessary for your hotel. Outdoor pool related parties can be a huge money spinner for any hotel.
Food and Beverage. More of an issue than what you will be selling, but consider how you will be selling it. Attractive and safe cutlery and glasses are available. It might look fancy to have classic items, but even a broken teapot can cut someone’s foot. Something that has happened to me, I might add.
Lessons. Whether a guest is someone staying at your hotel, or someone who is living nearby, swimming lessons could mean a regular income from your swimming pool. We are all looking for assistance in the gym, and so why not apply this same strategy to your swimming pool?
Bookings. Have you thought about booking out the whole pool and venue? This can be a huge money spinner for private and even corporate events.
Surface Safety. There is nothing worse than plain old concrete. There are a range of modern options that give you a huge amount of grip, safety and that great look. Sandstone pavers naturally offer grip, longevity and a classic feel. The look of water and sandstone is just right. If you must go with concrete, you should think about the application of anti-slip coatings. You can choose your color, and you know your guests will be safe.
Life Guards. Do you really want to risk something going wrong? Many hotels have signs and agreements that guests swim at their own risk. If something goes wrong, your hotel will be stuck with the reputation for years. It may turn a lot of people away from your hotel
Are you making the most out of your hotel’s swimming pool? If it is too much for you to handle internally, consider outsourcing management, and having a financial arrangement that guarantees you a minimum monthly return and additional profit share.

A stop for ice cream around Lake Norman

“Going out for ice cream” can mean more than one thing. If all you really want is ice cream, you can step into any supermarket or convenience store and find something that’s icy, creamy and churned.
But “going out for ice cream” implies something more. It’s that special stop with the team when the Little Leaguers chalk up a win (or when they don’t). It’s a summer-evening drive while you wait for the house to cool off after supper.

It’s a break in a too-rushed day. It’s a special moment with your grandpa or a stolen moment with your grandchild.
Before the full heat of summer gets here, we looked around the Lake Norman area to find special places where you can get a cold treat. The reason to go is up to you.
Mooresville Ice Cream Co., 172 N. Broad St., Mooresville, 704-664-5456, http://deluxe1924. Hours: 11 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays, and 3-7 p.m. during Cruise-Ins (the first Saturday of each month). Prices: $2 for single cup or cone up to $4.40 for a triple, plus kiddie-size for $1.20.

Talk about eating local -- the little ice cream shop in downtown Mooresville is at the front of the DeLuxe Ice Cream plant, where they’ve been making ice cream since 1924. They’ve got plans to add an ice cream parlor with tables on the corner, but for now, it’s a simple place: A front room, a counter and a chalkboard for the flavors.
Make that a very big chalkboard. They usually carry around 34 flavors, from the new Red Velvet Cake (with a cream cheese swirl and chunks of cake) to Chocolate Overboard (chocolate ice cream with chocolate fudge ripple and chocolate truffle chunks).
Don’t miss the cooler full of frozen treats. DeLuxe is known for its ice cream sandwiches, including double-chocolate, and the hand-dipped Nutty Cone.

Carolina Cones, 20801 N. Main St. (N.C. 115) in downtown Cornelius, 704-892-8190. Hours: 10 a.m.-10 p.m. daily through Nov. 15. Prices: $2.88 to $4.53 for cones and cups; half-gallons are $8.70.
This is the crowd-pleaser, and a beloved institution in Cornelius since 1981. It’s a combination ice cream parlor and garden center, so you can stop in for plants and cool off before you do the yardwork.

Owner Gary Winge (wing-GEE) opened the ice cream shop as a business for his mother to run and ended up adding a garden center to have a second business. While they were closed for the winter, he gave the place a facelift, taking out the video rentals and adding a new seating area. But he wouldn’t dare make major changes -- the toy train with the Hershey’s Syrup tank car still runs around the track just below the ceiling, and the toy and candy vending machines still draw kids.

“Our customer base is just so loyal,” he says. “We’re very particular (about) how our place looks and who works for us.”
The ice creams come from a half-dozen makers and there are enough flavors to make double rows in three long coolers. Superhero is popular with kids -- vanilla ice cream in vivid colors. Chocolate Doughnut Crunch has chunks of frozen chocolate doughnut holes, like Cookie Dough Ice Cream with more oomph. And they hold a staff tasting to pick new flavors every year. This year, the winners were Banana Crunch and Coconut Almond Joy.
FreshBerry Frozen Yogurt Cafe, Martin Crossing Center, 109-D Williamson Road, Mooresville, 704-664-7962. Hours: 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, noon to 9 p.m. Sundays. Prices: $3.99 to $5.99, including up to three toppings. Also has fruit and yogurt pops ($2.29 each) and smoothies ($4.49 for 20 ounces).
It feels cooler just hanging out in this new franchise with the very kicky vibe: It’s all white and orange and bamboo, with colorful art on the walls.

The regular flavors are tart (white and creamy, with a taste like a cross between Greek yogurt and cheesecake), strawberry, dark chocolate and vanilla. Plus there are a couple of special flavors every day, such as clementine (like a Dreamsicle) and acai.
The fun is in the toppings, though. They cover the counter, from fruit and coconut to candies and even Fruity Pebbles and Cap’n Crunch. There’s a suggestion box where you can add your own ideas.
Kerrigan’s Ice Cream, 862 Brawley School Road, Mooresville, www.kerrigansicecream.com, 704-799-1335. Hours: 2-9 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, noon-9:30 p.m. Friday-Sunday. Prices: $2.39 for single scoop to $4.59 for triples, $2.19 for kid-size scoop.

There’s nothing quaint about the location, tucked back in a strip mall on busy Brawley School Road. But they’ve done their best to make it family-friendly inside, with an old-time ice cream parlor feel.
The 18 or so flavors come from Hersheys, in a great lineup, from oatmeal cookie to a really chunky butter pecan. A kid-pleaser is definitely Play Doh -- bright yellow ice cream with pink and blue cookie chunks.
The store also features a lineup of five sundaes, from your basic hot fudge to the Peanut Butter Cup Sundae -- two scoops of chocolate Moose Tracks with marshmallows, hot fudge, whipped cream, crushed peanut butter cups and a cherry.

The Buttery & Beanery and The Conery, 1653 Mecklenburg Highway (N.C. 115), Mooresville, 704-892-0263. 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Mondays, Thursdays-Saturdays, closed Sundays and Tuesdays. Penguin Palace Shave-Ice: Noon-7 p.m. daily except Tuesdays.
It isn’t hard to spot the Buttery & Beanery -- it’s the bright yellow and black building on N.C. 115 a couple of miles north of downtown Davidson. It can be hard finding them open, though: The little store and lunch counter opens early for breakfast and it sometimes closes before 2 p.m. When it is open, The Conery is a small counter in the dining room, where you can get sundaes, milkshakes and floats for $3.50 each.

Right next door you’ll also find the Penguin Palace (don’t you wish it was called the Shave-Icery, just to stick with the theme?), a shave-ice stand in a fenced area so it’s safe for kids to run around while adults sit at the tables under the trees.

After a solid run, Quinton Jackson really emerged at Pride's 2003 middleweight tournament where he forced Chuck Liddell's corner to end the bout in the semifinals before an entertaining loss to Wanderlei Silva in the finals. Jackson rebounded with two wins, including the infamous power bomb over Ricardo Arona, earning himself a rematch with Silva on Halloween, 2004. Jackson put in a spirited performance, but ultimately loss the fight to Silva. Flash forward to 2007 when Jackson debuts in the UFC. He begins the end of Chuck Liddell at UFC 71 while capturing the UFC light heavyweight title. Jackson defends the belt against Dan Henderson before dropping it to Forrest Griffin in a classic bout following a stint as coaches on the Ultimate Fighter. After a wild episode in his truck, Jackson finally avenges his losses to Wanderlei Silva when he knocked out his adversary in the first round at UFC 92. Jackson returned at UFC 123 with a controversial decision victory over Lyoto Machida.

Matt Hamill entered the UFC through the third season of the Ultimate Fighter. After three victories, he dropped a decision to Michael Bisping, which is still the posterchild for controversial decisions in the UFC. After rebounding over Tim Boetsch, Hamill suffered his first non-blemished loss of his career when Rich Franklin put him down with a body kick at UFC 88. Hamill is currently on a five-fight winning streak, including a laughable DQ "victory" over Jon Jones at the TUF 10 Finale.

Why should you watch?

Well, you bought the pay-per-view, and this is the aftermost alive bender of the evening. And maybe "Rampage" will say article funny at the end.

Gil Scott-Heron

Gil Scott-Heron, Poet And Musician, Has Died

Gil Scott-Heron died Friday afternoon in New York, his book publisher reported. They was 62. The influential poet & musician is often credited with being of the progenitors of hip-hop, & is best known for the spoken-word piece "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised."

Scott-Heron was born in Chicago in 1949. He spent his early years in Jackson, Tenn., attended high school in The Bronx, and spent time at Pennsylvania's Lincoln University before settling in Manhattan. His recording career began in 1970 with the album Small Talk at 125th and Lenox, which featured the first version of "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised." The track has since been referenced and parodied extensively in pop culture.

Scott-Heron continued to record through the 1970s and early '80s, before taking a lengthy hiatus. He briefly returned to the studio for 1994's Spirits. That album featured the track "Message to the Messengers," in which Scott-Heron cautions the hip-hop generation that arose in his absence to use its newfound power responsibly. He has been cited as a key influence by many in the hip-hop community — such as rapper-producer Kanye West, who closed his platinum-selling 2010 album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy with a track built around a sample of Scott-Heron's voice.

Scott-Heron struggled publicly with substance abuse in the 2000s, and spent the early part of the decade in and out of jail on drug possession charges. He began performing again after his release in 2007, and in 2010 released a new album, I'm New Here, to widespread critical acclaim.

Mountains Beached in My Memories, a new book by Michael J. O'Loughlin, has been released by RoseDog Books..

For much of the past forty years, Michael J. O'Loughlin has sought peace and seclusion in unspoiled, natural beauty. His teaching career facilitated summer ski treks in Canadian wilderness areas, backpacking along the US continental divide, and canoeing/kayaking treks on the Great lakes. His growth in the coursework of those experiences was enhanced by teaching positions on Vermont's Burke Mountain and Puerto Rico's NW coast.

The incredible beauty of the Adirondack Mountains, the sunset grandeur of Oswego, and the waterfall wonders of Watkins Glen-all in upstate New York-provided inspiration for him and playgrounds for his children. In recent years, his life along Florida’s Gulf Coast continues to kindle his muse. His photographic "bent" provided most of the photos that accompany these poems. Chip, Tom, and Is contributed the rest.

Mountains Beached in My Memories is a 62-page paperback with a retail price of $15.00. The ISBN is 978-1-4349-8386-2. Rose Dog Books of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania published it. Obama: in Europe, signs Patriot Act extension

(AP)  WASHINGTON (AP) — Minutes before a midnight deadline, President Barack Obama signed in to law a four-year extension of post-Sept. 11 powers to search records and conduct roving wiretaps in pursuit of terrorists.

"It's an important tool for us to continue dealing with an ongoing terrorist threat," Obama said Friday after a meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

With Obama in France, the White House said the president used an autopen machine that holds a pen and signs his actual signature. It is only used with proper authorization of the president.

Congress sent the bill to the president with only hours to go on Thursday before the provisions expired at midnight. Votes taken in rapid succession in the Senate and House came after lawmakers rejected attempts to temper the law enforcement powers to ensure that individual liberties are not abused.

The Senate voted 72-23 for the legislation to renew three terrorism-fighting authorities. The House passed the measure 250-153 on an evening vote.

A short-term expiration would not have interrupted ongoing operations but would have barred the government from seeking warrants for new investigations.

Congress bumped up against the deadline mainly because of the stubborn resistance from a single senator, Republican freshman Rand Paul of Kentucky, who saw the terrorist-hunting powers as an abuse of privacy rights. Paul held up the final vote for several days while he demanded a chance to change the bill to diminish the government's ability to monitor individual actions.

The measure would add four years to the legal life of roving wiretaps, authorized for a person rather than a communications line or device; court-ordered searches of business records; and surveillance of non-American "lone wolf" suspects without confirmed ties to terrorist groups.

The roving wiretaps and access to business records are small parts of the USA Patriot Act enacted after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. But unlike most of the act, which is permanent law, those provisions must be renewed periodically because of concerns that they could be used to violate privacy rights. The same applies to the "lone wolf" provision, which was part of a 2004 intelligence law.

Paul argued that in the rush to meet the terrorist threat in 2001 Congress enacted a Patriot Act that tramples on individual liberties. He had some backing from liberal Democrats and civil liberties groups who have long contended the law gives the government authority to spy on innocent citizens.

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said he voted for the act in 2001 "while ground zero was still burning." But "I soon realized it gave too much power to government without enough judicial and congressional oversight."

Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., said the provision on collecting business records can expose law-abiding citizens to government scrutiny. "If we cannot limit investigations to terrorism or other nefarious activities, where do they end?" he asked.

"The Patriot Act has been used improperly again and again by law enforcement to invade Americans' privacy and violate their constitutional rights," said Laura W. Murphy, director of the ACLU Washington legislative office.

Still, coming just a month after intelligence and military forces tracked down and killed Osama bin Laden, there was little appetite for tampering with the terrorism-fighting tools. These tools, said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, "have kept us safe for nearly a decade and Americans today should be relieved and reassured to know that these programs will continue."

Intelligence officials have denied improper use of surveillance tools, and this week both FBI Director Robert Mueller and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper sent letters to congressional leaders warning of serious national security consequences if the provisions were allowed to lapse.

The Obama administration says that without the three authorities the FBI might not be able to obtain information on terrorist plotting inside the U.S. and that a terrorist who communicates using different cell phones and email accounts could escape timely surveillance.

"When the clock strikes midnight tomorrow, we would be giving terrorists the opportunity to plot attacks against our country, undetected," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said on the Senate floor Wednesday. In unusually personal criticism of a fellow senator, he warned that Paul, by blocking swift passage of the bill, "is threatening to take away the best tools we have for stopping them."

The nation itself is divided over the Patriot Act, as reflected in a Pew Research Center poll last February, before the killing of bin Laden, that found that 34 percent felt the law "goes too far and poses a threat to civil liberties. Some 42 percent considered it "a necessary tool that helps the government find terrorists." That was a slight turnaround from 2004 when 39 percent thought it went too far and 33 percent said it was necessary.

Paul, after complaining that Reid's remarks were "personally insulting," asked whether the nation "should have some rules that say before they come into your house, before they go into your banking records, that a judge should be asked for permission, that there should be judicial review? Do we want a lawless land?"

Paul agreed to let the bill go forward after he was given a vote on two amendments to rein in government surveillance powers. Both were soundly defeated. The more controversial, an amendment that would have restricted powers to obtain gun records in terrorist investigations, was defeated 85-10 after lawmakers received a letter from the National Rifle Association stating that it was not taking a position on the measure.

According to a senior Justice Department national security official testifying to Congress last March, the government has sought roving wiretap authority in about 20 cases a year between 2001 and 2010 and has sought warrants for business records less than 40 times a year, on average. The government has yet to use the lone wolf authority.

But the ACLU also points out that court approvals for business record access jumped from 21 in 2009 to 96 last year, and the organization contends the Patriot Act has blurred the line between investigations of actual terrorists and those not suspected of doing anything wrong.

Two Democratic critics of the Patriot Act, Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon and Udall of Colorado, on Thursday extracted a promise from Senate Intelligence Committee chairman Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., that she would hold hearings with intelligence and law enforcement officials on how the law is being carried out.

Wyden says that while there's numerous interpretations of how the Patriot Act works, the official government interpretation of the law remains classified. "A significant gap has developed now between what the public thinks the law says and what the government secretly claims it says," Wyden said.

(CBS/WGCL) DEKALB COUNTY. Ga. - Last September, megachurch preacher Bishop Eddie Long stood before his congregation at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church a week after gay sex allegations surfaced between him & teenage boys, & they told members they was going to fight the allegations.

But Long chose not to fight in court. Instead he reached a settlement and paid off the four young men who accused him of using his power to influence them into sexual relationships with him, reports CBS affiliate WGCL.

"You can interpret that any way you want, but usually people do not settle cases unless there is some reason to do so," said former DeKalb County Prosecutor J. Tom Morgan.

Morgan told WGCL he is familiar with cases like Long's.

"They had to reach a settlement if they did not want any statement by the Bishop on record," said Morgan.
Former New Birth members Spencer LeGrande, Anthony Flagg, Maurice Robinson and Jamal Parris filed civil lawsuits against Long last September.

The attorneys for both sides emailed WGCL statements that simply said, "The case is resolved."
Morgan said their silence suggests part of the agreement is that no one talks about it.
New Birth member Elder Dandridge said she's glad the case is over. She said her pastor is innocent.
"We're very excited, very elated about what's taken place. To God be the glory," said Dandridge.
Because Long settled out of court, some DeKalb County residents question his innocence..
"It says that he's hiding the truth," said Robyn Senior.

And just how much did Long pay to settle the case?
"Nobody knows what the numbers are. I would be sure it's in the millions," said Morgan.
Morgan estimated Long paid millions because that's what he said a Catholic church paid victims in a similar case that he prosecuted.

Air France Flight 447

Full Report About What Happened On Air France Flight 447

Air France 447 tail

France's air-crash inquiry agency has released an updated document on what happened aboard Air France Flight 447, which crashed in the Atlantic years ago.

As described here, the plane stalled at 38,000 feet--meaning that its speed slowed to the point where its wings no longer generated lift for the plane to stay in the air--and it then plummeted at ten,000 feet per minute in to the Atlantic. All the way down, the pilots tried to regain control of the aircraft, but failed. The plane remained in a stall despite having all its engines operating normally at full thrust.

(To visualize this, think of a plane with the nose up about 40-degrees-- almost halfway to vertical--falling pretty much straight down, without much air moving over the wings. Planes can't fly like that.).
The report makes it clear that at least one of the plane's speed indicators failed when the plane was flying normally, and when it did, the auto-pilot cut out. The co-pilot then took over manual control of the plane. And, based on the report, it appears he then fatally screwed up.
Specifically, the co-pilot pulled the plane's nose up, causing it to climb and causing its speed to decrease.
Two stall warnings immediately sounded, indicating that the plane's speed was becoming dangerously slow.
Eleven seconds later (not a rapid response), the co-pilot pushed the plane's nose down a bit--but apparently not enough. The plane continued to gain altitude rapidly.
Thirty-five seconds later, the stall-warning sounded again. The co-pilot continued to hold the plane's nose up. It's "angle of attack" (position relative to the air flowing over the wings) continued to increase.
Shortly thereafter, having climbed rapidly from 35,000 feet to 38,000 feet, the plane appears to have stalled, with the co-pilot still holding the controls in a "nose-up" position. (Again, a stall is not an "engine stall"--it is a condition in which the air moving over the wings no longer provides enough lift to keep the plane in the air.)

Fifty seconds later, with the plane back at 35,000 feet and now falling at 10,000 feet per minute, the pilot re-entered the cockpit. (He had been on break with the auto-pilot cut out). The plane's engines remained near full thrust and were operating normally for the rest of the flight. About 35 seconds later, the co-pilot finally pushed the nose down--to no avail.
About 30 seconds after that, still falling at 10,000 feet per minute, the plane passed 10,000 feet.
About 1 minute later, the recordings stopped. The plane was falling at nearly 11,000 feet per minute when it hit the water. Its nose was still up.
Based on this preliminary report, and speaking as someone who has a pilot's license and used to fly small propeller planes, it appears the co-pilot screwed up. He was flying partially blind--one of the plane's airspeed indicators blipped out--but he then moved the controls in a way that slowed the plane down and caused it to stall.

Presumably, when flying an Airbus 330 at 35,000 feet at night in a storm, it is extraordinarily difficult to accurately gauge airspeed without the help of the airspeed indicators. But assuming the plane's altitude and attitude controls were still working, which they appear to have been, the pilot's decision to pull the nose up seems to have been a fatal (and basic) error. Maintaining sufficient airspeed is the single most critical priority in any airplane. Planes cannot fly when they stall, and in many airplanes--most notably jets at high altitudes--it is extremely difficult to recover from a stall. So the pilot's first and most important job is to maintain enough airspeed.
Now, this sounds simple, but at the time it probably was anything but. Immediately figuring out what is going on in an airplane at night when instruments cut out can be very difficult, especially if you don't realize that the instruments have failed. That said, pretty much the first thing you learn in flight school is that when there is any question about having enough airspeed, you push the nose down. Perhaps readers who have flown Airbuses in such conditions can explain how easy this error would have been to make and, once it was made, whether it would have been possible to recover if the pilots had done something different.
The text of France's BEA report is below. The key section is in red:
History of Flight
On Sunday 31 May 2009, the Airbus A330-203 registered F-GZCP operated by Air France was
programmed to perform scheduled flight AF447 between Rio de Janeiro Galeão and Paris
Charles de Gaulle. Twelve crew members (3 flight crew, 9 cabin crew) and 216 passengers
were on board. Departure was planned for 22 h 00(1).
At around 22 h 10, the crew was cleared to start the engines and to leave the parking space.
Take-off took place at 22 h 29. The Captain was PNF, one of the co-pilots was PF.
The take-off weight was 232.8 t (for a MTOW of 233t), including 70.4 t of fuel.
At 1 h 35 min 15 , the crew informed the ATLANTICO controller that they had passed the
INTOL point then announced the following estimated times: SALPU at 1 h 48 then ORARO at
2 h 00. They also transmitted the SELCAL code and a test was undertaken successfully.
At 1 h 35 min 46, the controller asked the crew to maintain FL350 and to give their estimated
time at TASIL.
At 1 h 55, the Captain woke the second co-pilot and said "[…] he’s going to take my place".
Between 1 h 59 min 32 and 2 h 01 min 46 , the Captain attended the briefing between the
two co-pilots, during which the PF said, in particular "the little bit of turbulence that you just saw
[…] we should find the same ahead […] we’re in the cloud layer unfortunately we can’t climb much
for the moment because the temperature is falling more slowly than forecast" and that "the logon
with Dakar failed". The Captain left the cockpit.
The airplane approached the ORARO point. It was flying at flight level 350 [35,000 feet] and at Mach 0.82 [approx. 600mph] and the pitch attitude was about 2.5 degrees. The weight and balance of the airplane were around 205 tonnes and 29% respectively. Autopilot 2 and auto-thrust were engaged.
At 2 h 06 min 04, the PF called the cabin crew, telling them that "in two minutes we should enter an area where it’ll move about a bit more than at the moment, you should watch out" and he added "I’ll call you back as soon as we’re out of it".
At 2 h 08 min 07 , the PNF said "you can maybe go a little to the left […]". The airplane began a slight turn to the left, the change in relation to the initial route being about 12 degrees. The level
of turbulence increased slightly and the crew decided to reduce the speed to about Mach 0.8.
From 2 h 10 min 05 , the autopilot then auto-thrust disengaged and the PF said "I have the controls". The airplane began to roll to the right and the PF made a left nose-up input. The stall warning sounded twice in a row. The recorded parameters show a sharp fall from about 275 kt to 60 kt in the speed displayed on the left primary flight display (PFD), then a few moments later in the speed displayed on the integrated standby instrument system (ISIS).
Note 1: Only the speeds displayed on the left PFD and the ISIS are recorded on the FDR; the speed displayed on the right side is not recorded.
Note 2: Autopilot and auto-thrust remained disengaged for the rest of the flight.
At 2 h 10 min 16, the PNF said "so, we’ve lost the speeds" then "alternate law […]".
Note 1: The angle of attack is the angle between the airflow and longitudinal axis of the airplane. This information is not presented to pilots.
Note 2 : In alternate or direct law, the angle-of-attack protections are no longer available but a stall warning is triggered when the greatest of the valid angle-of-attack values exceeds a certain threshold.
The airplane’s angle of attack increased progressively beyond 10 degrees and the plane started to climb. The PF made nose-down control inputs and alternately left and right roll inputs. The vertical speed, which had reached 7,000 ft/min, dropped to 700 ft/min and the roll varied between 12 degrees right and 10 degrees left. The speed displayed on the left side increased sharply to 215 kt (Mach 0.68). The airplane was then at an altitude of about 37,500 ft and the recorded angle of attack was around 4 degrees.
From 2 h 10 min 50, the PNF tried several times to call the Captain back.
At 2 h 10 min 51 , the stall warning was triggered again. The thrust levers were positioned in the TO/GA detent and the PF maintained nose-up inputs. The recorded angle of attack, of around 6 degrees at the triggering of the stall warning, continued to increase. The trimmable horizontal stabilizer (THS) passed from 3 to 13 degrees nose-up in about 1 minute and remained in the latter position until the end of the flight.
Around fifteen seconds later, the speed displayed on the ISIS increased sharply towards 185 kt; it was then consistent with the other recorded speed. The PF continued to make nose-up inputs. The airplane’s altitude reached its maximum of about 38,000 ft, its pitch attitude and angle of attack being 16 degrees.
Note: The inconsistency between the speeds displayed on the left side and on the ISIS lasted a little less than one minute.
At around 2 h 11 min 40 , the Captain re-entered the cockpit. During the following seconds, all of the recorded speeds became invalid and the stall warning stopped.
Note: When the measured speeds are below 60 kt, the measured angle of attack values are considered invalid and are not taken into account by the systems. When they are below 30 kt, the speed values themselves are considered invalid.
The altitude was then about 35,000 ft, the angle of attack exceeded 40 degrees and the vertical speed was about -10,000 ft/min. The airplane’s pitch attitude did not exceed 15 degrees and the engines’ N1’s were close to 100%. The airplane was subject to roll oscillations that sometimes reached 40 degrees. The PF made an input on the sidestick to the left and nose-up stops, which lasted about 30 seconds.
At 2 h 12 min 02, the PF said "I don’t have any more indications", and the PNF said "we have no valid indications". At that moment, the thrust levers were in the IDLE detent and the engines’ N1’s were at 55%. Around fifteen seconds later, the PF made pitch-down inputs. In the following moments, the angle of attack decreased, the speeds became valid again and the stall warning sounded again.
At 2 h 13 min 32, the PF said "we’re going to arrive at level one hundred". About fifteen seconds later, simultaneous inputs by both pilots on the sidesticks were recorded and the PF said "go ahead you have the controls".
The angle of attack, when it was valid, always remained above 35 degrees.
The recordings stopped at 2 h 14 min 28. The last recorded values were a vertical speed of -10,912 ft/min, a ground speed of 107 kt, pitch attitude of 16.2 degrees nose-up, roll angle of 5.3 degrees left and a magnetic heading of 270 degrees.
NEW FINDINGS
At this stage of the investigation, as an addition to the BEA interim reports of 2 July and 17
December 2009, the following new facts have been established:

ˆ The composition of the crew was in accordance with the operator’s procedures.

ˆ At the time of the event, the weight and balance of the airplane were within the operatio-
nal limits.

ˆ At the time of the event, the two co-pilots were seated in the cockpit and the Captain was resting. The latter returned to the cockpit about 1 min 30 after the disengagement of the autopilot.

ˆ There was an inconsistency between the speeds displayed on the left side and the integrated standby instrument system (ISIS). This lasted for less than one minute.

ˆ After the autopilot disengagement:

„the airplane climbed to 38,000 ft,

„the stall warning was triggered and the airplane stalled,

„the inputs made by the PF were mainly nose-up,

„the descent lasted 3 min 30, during which the airplane remained stalled. The angle of
attack increased and remained above 35 degrees,

„the engines were operating and always responded to crew commands.

ˆ The last recorded values were a pitch attitude of 16.2 degrees nose-up, a roll angle of
5.3 degrees left and a vertical speed of -10,912 ft/min.
